We stayed for one night at this hotel as a base for leaf-peeping in the Litchfield Hills of Connecticut. It appears as though the building was originally in some other chain of hotels and retrofitted to be a Hampton Inn. It just was not typical of most of the chain's hotels-- breakfast room was in the basement area-- down a flight of steps or via elevator and not off the lobby, the lobby itself was laid-out totally differently from other Hampton's. The elevators were in an odd place as well. It was also apparent from the elevators that the building was rather old. However, they did a reasonably good job at updating all the rest of the hotel so age wasn't that apparent elsewhere. The hotel is located in the back of a parking lot and faces a couple of restaurants and a major highway. There are no "grounds" to the hotel at all, just a large parking lot that reminded me of the lot in a strip shopping center. Parking was also somewhat difficult. We had to wait a fairly long time to get checked in including putting up with someone who decided to butt in front of me. The desk clerk didn't pick up on that and ended up apologizing to me for the wait. That was annoying. The room we were given was satisfactory. However, even though I am a Hilton Honors member with a lot of stays, we were not given the normal AAA discount we have always received at every other Hampton Inn. We were told that "the computer" was not allowing the discount. The clerk said he would continue to try getting me the rate but that never happened. He said it was probably because the hotel was full. That bothered me because it was clear at breakfast the next morning that there were several kids' soccer teams staying at the hotel for a tournament and they normally get a group discount even though they may never stay at a Hampton Inn again. The breakfast was okay; space to sit was at a premium. It was an acceptable stay, but I think next time we are in the area, we will probably look for a hotel with a nicer location.
Higher floors would be better. Eat breakfast early to make sure you have a place to sit.
