For the very first time, we took a drive to Chamard Vineyards to eat at their relatively new Bistro. We had no idea what to expect. First of all, from the minute you drive down the driveway, you get the sense that you have been magically transported back to Napa or Sonoma California! That idea is exciting in itself. The setting and ambiance are stellar but how could the food be good?
Well guess what? It was "tremendous"....the chef has a huge garden and grows a lot of the greens, veggies and fruits that are on the menu. I started with one of the salad choices. No ordinary lettuce here...in fact I'm not sure what the green was...looked like clover...with Pancetta curls cooked to perfection...accompanied by thinly sliced tiny radishes, strawberries slices delicately sliced with tiny squares of goat cheese..all mixed with an incredibly delicious buttermilk salad dressing. It doesn't get much better or tastier than this...I practically licked my plate and I usually never finish my salad. We ordered a sliced baguette with the most delicious butter I have ever tasted. My main course was the steak fritte.....steak that was cooked to perfection, flavorful, tender and delicious..although the meat portion size is small, the serving of meat was actually the perfect health-wise .....and the fries were in a class by themselves..no french fries here.....sliced thin layers of potatoes deep fried to perfection. This place delivers if you are a foodie and appreciate well-prepared, gourmet type fare. Apparently the chef has worked in the Napa Valley and has sliced off some of Napa's food preparation creativity and transported it to Clinton, CT. How fortunate for us that he chose to come to Connecticut. The bistro is small so make sure you make a reservation and only tell your foodie friends about this place!
