I went to Chamard on a gorgeous Tuesday around noon. My boyfriend and I wanted to buy a bottle of their wine, sit outside and eat. It was too beautiful out to be inside a dark winery. When you walk into the building, the bistro is to your right and the tasting room is to your left. We went to the bistro first thinking we should eat something before drinking a bottle of wine. There were two men ahead of us looking at the menu, so we stood back behind them and waited. Someone from Chamard came out and asked if they were being helped. The men replied they were just looking at the menu and planned to come back later. The man looked at us and walked away. We thought it was strange but let it go. The two men in front of us left so we moved up closer to the podium hoping someone would come out to help us. Nope. We looked at the menu while we waited. After a good five minutes of waiting, we decided to walk over to the tasting area to see if anyone was around there. We walked in and could see a few people sitting outside on the deck, one party at a table in the tasting room, and one woman being helped at the bar. She was putting in an order for food. We stood and waited. After she was done, the man helping her walked right past us without saying a word -- not a hello, be with you in a minute, nothing. We looked at the menu the woman left behind and after ten minutes we'd figured out what we wanted to order for food and wine. During these ten minutes the man behind the bar was walking in and out, answered a phone call, all without acknowledging us. I was starting to get annoyed at this point. Finally he came over and asked what we wanted. As soon as I said we wanted to order food and wine he said we'd have to go back to the bistro to order food. (Wasn't he just helping the other woman order food?? And why were there menus scattered around the bar if we couldn't order in there??) I didn't call him out on that but instead walked back to the bistro as he advised - after I told him we'd already waited over there for 5+ minutes without being helped. He found someone to help us this time. We told her we already knew what we wanted - we were going to split three items off the regular menu left behind by the customer in the tasting room. She said if we wanted to sit outside we had to order off a different, abbreviated menu. I was taken aback by this because the menu we saw said nothing about not being able to sit outside. The menu we were given for "outside seating" included a few cheese plates, an angus burger and a couple other things. I'm vegetarian so the burger was not an option, and I wanted actual food, not just cheese. I asked why we had to order off that special menu - all we wanted was to move five feet outside so we could sit outside and enjoy the weather - plus other people were eating outside (assuming off the shorter menu?). She replied it was a zoning thing and didn't try to explain any further. I don't understand -- if you can bring cheese and a burger outside, why cant you bring soup out there too? It made no sense and she just stared back at me like it was my problem to figure out. This was the last straw for me, after being ignored by two employees and this third one not making any effort to explain their weird menu situation, I didn't want to give this place any of my money. This was a vacation day for both of us and we planned on spending a good amount of money to treat ourselves. I was so disappointed with the lack of customer service and the confusing nature of how the place operated. I will never recommend this place to my friends or family and I will definitely never be back. My boyfriend and I love visiting CT wineries and have had amazing experiences at every single one of them up to this point.
