“Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

Have been to Lake Lillinonah since the late fifties after the lake was created during the early and mid fifties as a result of the Shepaug dam. The dam was completed, just before the great flood in 1955. It is thought that this dam is what saved the lower Housatonic River communities from total disaster. Since that time, the lake has evolved into a popular boating and fishing waterway. It extends from the Shepaug dam and branches off in two directions, the Shepaug river (Roxbury) and the Housatonic to New Milford, approximately nine miles up river. The lake has limited access, with only two public bot launches. There are others that belong to the local town in the area. Years ago, there was gas available to purchase on the water, but has long been discontinued. This greatly benefited the lake and lessened the boast traffic, allowing the area to recover. A previous reviewer categorized it as polluted. This is NOT the case. Years ago, the GE plant in Massachusetts was known to dump PCB's, but was ordered to cease the practice in the early sixties.
To this day I find Lake Lillinonah to be a place of peace and solitude. I still have a power boat, but prefer to kayak in the upper Roxbury area. The fishing is great, and a fun place to meet with friends and family.

“polluted”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2012

I used to put my canoe in at Lake Lillinonah and enjoyed paddling along the many inlets. Though there were some motorboats which liked to torment paddlers by generating large waves, most motorboat users respected paddlers and gave them wide berth. The two issues which drove us away from Lake Lillinonah were the high nitrogen levels resulting from the large amounts of algae and millefoil, followed by being told that Danbury's waste water treatment product was pumped into the lake. Ewwww.

On a trip back from New Milford, we stopped in Bridgewater for sandwiches, then drove down to the boat launch area on the Lake and ate them. It could not have been more beautiful !!!
