Plenty of people live in Connecticut's Litchfield Hills (or visit from NYC on weekends) for the beautiful country surroundings, not because they crave a cultural backwater. Proof of this is the enduring success of the Bantam Cinema, a two-screen, converted-from-a-barn theatre. It's just a little farther than a stone's throw down a side road off the main drag through town. Your reward for finding it is a frequently changing roster of (mostly) indie films that are impossible to find anywhere else for miles (and I mean MILES) around. Treat yourself to a coffee, a selection of teas or a homemade cookie at a snack bar that's better than what you'll find at any megaplex. (Or, after the film, you can grab a beer and some good barbeque just across the street at Wood's.) My wife and I go here a dozen times a year and always enjoy the show.
