“A place to sleep, but not much more”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2013

We got a room here because of the convenience to the mountain at Winter Park and the price. For those two reasons, it's fine. However, the experience was not great. Parking is "first-come, first served," which means people who stayed the night before and have checked out but are skiing for the day still have their cars in the garage when people are checking in for the next night. We could not use our "free" parking pass because of this. We parked outside around the back of the building and hauled our gear up to our room by the side stairs - the only elevator is next to check-in, only convenient to the parking garage. This would not normally be such an issue but because we couldn't use the heated garage, we didn't want to leave our ski boots and outer gear outside to be frozen in the morning. We left our skis locked on top of our car and just trusted that they would be alright in the morning. (They were.) One concern -- the outside doors were never locked and therefore accessible to anybody at any hour, on the other side of the building from the check-in and not visible from the street. That didn't really seem safe to me. Our room was clean enough and though quite outdated, it had adequate towels and TP. My children settled in to watch a movie and discovered that our remote control didn't access the "movie channels" advertised on the TV and the pamphlet in the room. When we called to ask for help, we were told that only some of the rooms have that kind of TV. It is basically luck of the draw whether you get a room with movie channel access. We thought that was very odd. The mattresses were fair -- a little too soft for all of us. No minifridge or included continental breakfast. Again, for what we needed, the room was functional, but overall not worth the money or experience. I'll stay somewhere down in Winter Park or Fraser next time to get the amenities I would expect in your average hotel.

I think it's important to remember that this a three star hotel and a very good one in my opinion. If you go expecting five star luxury, you will be disappointed. This is a hotel that's geared up for skiers - you can wear your boots in the hotel and store all your stuff in your room. It has a relaxed feel where anything goes and nothing is too much of a problem.

The rooms are nice and big. We had a room with two double beds overlooking the mountain. There is a train that goes through town tooting its horn every now and again. Worth taking a set of ear plugs if you're a light sleeper. Our friends stayed on the other side of the hotel (forest view). Previous reviews talked about being woken by the noise from the snowmobile company in these rooms. My friends had no such problems. I guess it depends how long you're sleeping in the morning, and whilst we're on the subject of snowmobiles - well worth doing one of their tours - amazing !!

Location: the hotel is not in the main part of town, but is very close to the slopes. Unfortunately it's the wrong side of an interstate and therefore you still have to get a bus – however this is free and reasonably regular. We had the option to do half-board and were very grateful that we did. The food was plentiful, not exactly à la carte, but good value and saved having to go out after a long days skiing.

The staff were amazing - incredibly helpful and nothing was too much trouble.

The spa area was nice after a day on the slopes. My only grumble is that the sauna kept breaking down and really needs to be fixed properly.

My only slight complaint was see brand new tv's being fitted in the bar whilst we we're there and (to my utter disgust) one being fitted in the restaurant area. If there is money to be spent, there a higher priorities and a restaurant NEVER needs a television.

To summarise - yes the hotel is a little tired and probably could be with a bit of a refurb. That said, we found it to be great value for money with a nice relaxed feel and the staff really make you feel welcome. Thank you for a nice stay.

Recommend not spending your hard-earned money at this location. The staff in the restaurant are unprofessional...whether eating in the bar area or dining room, the staff are too busy talking among their "buddies" to provide any good service at all...just horrible service. The food is also far below par. They claim to have 3 chefs...maybe one good one would do. The food was horrible, period. When the bill arrived, it was wrong. Instead, they charged our credit card twice for over $60.00, twice. Now three weeks later and 4 calls to their hotel manager and restaurant manager to correct this problem...NOTHING! Still trying to resolve this problem. Avoid this place like the plague! They are many other options in the area...cross this off your list. Very unprofessional and customer service stinks!

We stayed here for only one night with our toddler, and enjoyed our stay. Kyle helped us check in early (thanks for that, mate) and in fact was very accommodating the whole time. The midday checkout on departure was also helpful. The hot tubs were great but the pool a bit cold. Didn't try the sauna. There's no loo's in the pool area, so take a leak before you head down. Our heater worked well and we had a room on the 4th floor facing the highway, which gave us great views over the resort and ski areas. No noise from highway. Very clean rooms - kudos to the housekeepers - no-one leaves a tip for these workers, but they really do a great job here, so I tipped 'em good, as I hate a dirty hotel room...

We dined at the restaurant for dinner and brekkie. Dinner was a bit plain, the pasta was downright terrible, veggies tasted like from a freezer, a bit pricey for what it was. Brekky was pure extortion at $14. We made the most of it and ate as much as we could but still felt ripped off. I recommend you make other plans for eating while in Winter Park.

Tip for Winter Park newbies - To get around, use the shuttle buses which look like old american school buses. We had no idea about these until our toddler went absolutely crazy after we had walked half a mile through snow with all our luggage, stroller etc. A shuttle bus noticed our situation and stopped for us - what a blessing, if only we knew about those earlier! Shuttle bus drivers are great, so helpful and full of 'local' advice!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the 4th or 5th floor, facing the highway.

The hotel location was great, basically across from the ski resort. A shuttle bus runs every 20 shuttle bus drivers are very friendly and helpful. I noticed people were not tipping these guys. Not nice because they are so helpful. Don't be cheap.
The hotel is basic, but very clean, kudos to housekeeping. Beds were comfortable enough but could have used a nice down comforter, (blankets were thin and old) as the heater in our room only worked for 30 minutes at a time and then blew cold air. We reported this everyday without remedy. In the end they gave us a space heater and comped us our last day.
Kyle, the hotel Manager was professional and accommodating, he tried his best to make up for the no heat situation.
The hot tubs need more detail to cleanliness and an anti foaming agent. The ceiling was covered in fuzz and needs cleaning. Don't look up and go early while the kids are at dinner.

Would also like to acknowledge Jack our server for breakfast and Mike our bartender in the pub. Jack was super friendly and helpful with things to do in the area and Mike was very receptive when I asked him to make us a "Broken Leg" cocktail, I gave him the secret recipe. Ask him.
This hotel needs work and needs to keep their staff and compensate them more for their excellent customer service.

Room Tip: Definitely get the mountain view.

Our room was basic and clean. The walls were quite thin so you can hear everything going on in the rooms next to you. The hot tub was nice but the pool was freezing and the sauna wasn't working.
There is a "brewery" in the hotel but it didn't seem like the staff knew what they were doing with the taps. We ordered Colorado Native and it didn't taste right. In fact it tasted pretty bad. I even saw other people noticing the same thing. We decided to go to another brew pub.
It was fine for a one night stay and the shuttle took us back and forth to the resort for skiing. The front desk staff were friendly. We booked through a discount sight and got a good deal. One thing I thought strange was they advertise that they offer a continental breakfast so we assumed it came with the room. It doesn't, it's $8.99. Not to say our stay was bad but if we ever go back I would try out another hotel.

Wife and I stayed for one night this past weekend (Feb 16-17). We had stayed here before and really the only reason why we booked here again was so that we could be close to the resort and enjoy the on-site restaurant. Otherwise, we actually do prefer a hotel that is actually in the town of Winter Park.

When I booked, I requested a deluxe room like we had before (suite-style, mini-fridge, microwave, fireplace, much larger space). Apparently they changed their definitions of deluxe room in the past couple years and we ended up with a standard room, which they do call "deluxe". My wife is a breast-feeding mom (kids were not with us) and was needing to use her breast-pump. There was no way to keep the milk cold without a mini-fridge. We called the front desk to ask for one and they had already loaned out all the ones they had. I did ask about the room and was told that the standard rooms are called "deluxe rooms" and the bigger rooms are called suites. All rooms were sold out so we could not move into a bigger room. We did make the most of it and used a lot of ice from the ice machine.

My other big beef with the place is the outrageously expensive breakfast! They charge, get this $14 per person for breakfast! Definitely not worth it! This hotel has yet to come into the 21st century when it comes to hotels offering free breakfasts. Even the ones that don't offer free breakfast only charge $5-8 per person. It is much more worth it to go into town to find breakfast for a reasonable price.

Otherwise, the room we did have was nice, clean, everything worked just fine and even though I got answers that I didn't want to hear from the hotel staff, they all were very ready and willing to help with a good positive attitude.

We really do like the pool area. The pool itself is a tad on the chilly side, but who goes to a swimming pool after a day of skiing? They have two really nice hot tubs available and both were in excellent working order when we were there. There are no restrooms in or near the pool area so make sure to go before leaving your room or be prepared to "get creative".

So if you're looking for location as a major deciding factor in your accommodations in Winter Park, WPML is a great option. Just be aware that if you book a "deluxe room" don't expect much more than an overpriced standard hotel room. Really ask whoever you are booking a room through exactly what comes with the room as "deluxe" may be quite an exaggeration as it was with us.

Room Tip: A deluxe room is only a standard room! Be careful what you are booking!
