“best lodge, best cloud forest”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2012

In my 11 years living, traveling and working in Guatemala, I've never stayed at a place as ideal as this. In my opinion, this lodge is the best all round value in any natural area of Guatemala. The food is amazing. The lodge is spotlessly clean. The trails are well maintained.

A few days ago, the lodge began to offer electricity thanks to the installation of a small hydro-electric generator.

The best thing about the lodge is the amazing cloud forest that surrounds it. This is truly one of the best slices of cloud forest in Guatemala.

We spent two wonderful days in this glorious place in the cloud forest. A friend from Coban was our escort: 4x4 wheel driver, birding/trail guide, and translator. The 3 hour drive from Coban was an adventure in itself. Once at the lodge we discovered a beautifully and immaculately crafted building. Armand had floral arrangements in the dining and living areas. Our group took up 3 of the 4 rooms. Our room was on a corner with two huge windows opening to the mountain vistas. We enjoyed a sparkling bathroom and looked forward to the hot showers in the evenings. At night we went to bed by candlelight. The meals were delicious and prepared with items from Armand's garden. We enjoyed wine/beer with dinner.

The first day we took a 4 hour loop hike which was a bit strenuous for our 60- something year old bodies, but we saw the illusive quetzal and many other species of birds. The next day our hike lasted 8 hours to the Mirador (lookout). Armand had packed a lunch for us and we stopped often along the way birding (more quetzals). The foliage was very diverse and at times primeval. The hike back to the lodge only took 2 hours. (The incentive was to get back before dark!)

We would highly recommend this place to anyone wanting to get off the beaten path and see a very special place. Travel and guides can be arranged through their website.

Room Tip: Tip: I had not charged my camera's battery before we went to Chelemha and was not able to do it...

We are glad you have enjoyed your visit to Chelemhá and we thank you for your nice review describing your personal experience in the forest and the lodge.
We are pleased to inform there is electricity at the Chelemhá Lodge since July 2012 thanks to a small hydroelectric power plant, and batteries can be charged now in the dinning area.
Thank you for your visit!

I stayed here with a small group of students. The views were spectacular, the trails beautiful, and the lodge a delight. The lodge was immaculately clean and the food absolutely phenomenal.

I visited the Lodge with 3 friends. I was pleasently surprised to find spatious private bathrooms with shower in the wooden lodge.
The beds are a little bit hard for my taste, but the location and the great food compensates.
The cook is from Switzerland and spoiled us with great meals (using herbs and vegetables from the garden).
We had a local guide to show us the cloud forest, where we luckily have seen a Ghezal bird!
But we did not even have to leave to lodge to see colorful birds, many hummingbirds visit the feed stations at the lodge.
There is no electricity, but we enjoyed the candlelight dinners.

GREAT!: views, rooms, the lodge, the decks, the common rooms, hummingbirds flitting like jewels, our guide Rogelio, the cloud forest, Armands' cooking & gracious hosting, even the birds, which are not that active in Dec.
Granted, this is not a hotel nor is it for most US travelers: rustic, only 4 rooms, no electricity, hot water only in the evening, 3hour 4x4 drive to arrive from Coban (this is WAY out there); but for those looking for something really special, this is the place.

The Chelemha Lodge is located at an elevation of 2000 m on the edge of the cloud forest. The lodge has 4 double rooms (with private bathroom and hot shower), lounge, dining room, and two observation balconies. Electricity is not available, the lodge is lit by candle light at night. Meals are excellent, prepared with fresh ingredients from the lodge's own vegetable garden. The Chelemha reserve has a network of trails in the cloud forest. Resplendent Quetzals are best to observe during the breeding season from March to May. According to the PROEVAL Bird Monitoring Program, more than 70 bird species have been observed from the observation balcony. Hummingbird feeders on the balconies attract 8 species. I am a professional birding guide and have brought groups to Chelemha since 2003. Chelemha is always a favorite site during a birding tour in Guatemala. Details on the Chelemha Reserve are available online on the website of Cayaya Birding and on the website of the Chelemha Reserve.
