We spent two wonderful days in this glorious place in the cloud forest. A friend from Coban was our escort: 4x4 wheel driver, birding/trail guide, and translator. The 3 hour drive from Coban was an adventure in itself. Once at the lodge we discovered a beautifully and immaculately crafted building. Armand had floral arrangements in the dining and living areas. Our group took up 3 of the 4 rooms. Our room was on a corner with two huge windows opening to the mountain vistas. We enjoyed a sparkling bathroom and looked forward to the hot showers in the evenings. At night we went to bed by candlelight. The meals were delicious and prepared with items from Armand's garden. We enjoyed wine/beer with dinner.
The first day we took a 4 hour loop hike which was a bit strenuous for our 60- something year old bodies, but we saw the illusive quetzal and many other species of birds. The next day our hike lasted 8 hours to the Mirador (lookout). Armand had packed a lunch for us and we stopped often along the way birding (more quetzals). The foliage was very diverse and at times primeval. The hike back to the lodge only took 2 hours. (The incentive was to get back before dark!)
We would highly recommend this place to anyone wanting to get off the beaten path and see a very special place. Travel and guides can be arranged through their website.
