After many years of ski-ing in Europe we took the plunge and headed to the USA this year, choosing Vail as it was close to Denver and also had a reputedly great ski-area. When looking at hotels we decided to go top end in case of inclement weather having already stayed at the Sietzmark in the summer (nice hotel as well). This lead us to the Sonnenalp Resort.
Firstly - Vail & the ski-ing - world class is the only words I can find. So different from Europe - polite people who don't push & shove at the lifts, fabulous range of terrain, huge ski area, nothing to complain about at all. We will never ski Europe again after this.
As for the Sonnenalp, it was excellent. The hotel is actually quite large but doesn't seem it as it seems well designed around a compact central area. The whole place is done in the Austrian style and clearly a lot of thought has gone into the design.
We stayed in a Lodge Pole suite overlooking the pool & hot tub area and it was one of the nicest hotel rooms we have stayed in in many ways. Pretty spacious, nice walk in closet, comfortable bed, fireplace and big bathroom with a heated floor, big shower and bath for two. Our only minor gripes were a lack of pressure on the shower and a less than perfect A/C - especially given the very dry mountain air.
As an example of the quality of the hotel - we had the TV go on the fritz and maintenance were there inside 5 minutes and got it fixed inside 10 - very efficient. They do a turn down service providing water, cookies and the next day's weather as well which is a nice touch.
The general hotel area is luxurious with nice lounges which have music in the evening, a good looking spa (we were too busy ski-ing to use it!), and a well equipped business center for internet access.
There are also three restaurants on site - we eat at Bully's 4 times - wholesome, good value burgers etc - and a vanilla margarita to die for, and the Swiss Chalet once which was also good. We didn't eat at Ludwigs as we don't equate upscale dining with ski trips. Breakfast was served in either a conservatory or Ludwigs and was superb, a huge selection of healthy and guilty options, all included in the room rate. One of the best hotel buffets I have eaten in.
The staff were unfailingly pleasant and efficient, and the concierge service very welcome. The hotel also has complementary lockers for skis & boots within 2 minutes walk of the main lift, so you get a pleasant 5 minute stroll after breakfast in the morning to wake up the ski muscles.
So - difficult to fault really, and we will almost certainly be back. We will be back in Vail next year for the snow and will probably stay at the Sonnenalp as it is flexible with dates - many of the other hotels seem to only book Saturday to Saturday which is a chore when you are travelling from the UK.
But then again, the Sonnenalp won't be too hard to take again!
