“Rinker cabin was an awesome getaway!”

My husband and I stayed at Mt. Elbert Lodge in the Rinker Cabin for our anniversary in Oct 2007. The views are awesome - several 14er mountains surround it.

We took a trip over Independence Pass and on to Aspen while there - the scenery was magnificent. If you visit in winter, Independence pass will probably be closed.

The cabin was warm, cozy, private. It was clean and things worked properly. We had very few complaints, if any.

We even arranged for a late checkout - we loved it so much!

We do intend to go back someday and highly recommend it in any season. They have several cabins, and also have a B&B lodge as well.

If you are looking for more secluded and back to nature, this is it!

We have stayed at Mt. Elbert twice and plan to spend a week there in 2008. We have stayed in the cabins and not the B & B, so cannot comment on the B & B. The cabins are somewhat rustic but have the necessary conveniences, although no TV or phones, which is OK by us. They do have a satellite delivered form of high speed wireless internet, which, while not as fast as DSL, etc., is a lot better than dial up. Have to remember you are in a remote location, which is the attraction of the place. The folks who run it are super. If you want a relaxing, quiet, scenic retreat, this is the place. The cabins have fire rings and firewood for campfires. There are a couple restaurants in the little town of Twin Lakes about four miles away (see my review of the Nordic Inn). There are a lot of hiking and fishing opportunities in the vicinity.

This is a nice little B&B with beautiful views. We stayed one day and night at the end of a backpacking trip, six of us in three rooms (out of the five rooms the place has). There are also rental cabins seperate from the main building, but I did not see any of those.

Rooms are very small. Decorations are quaint and appropriate. Rooms and bathrooms are clean, but with a few minor maintenance problems, nothing big.

Common area is a very nice place to lounge, play board games and stay warm. Beautiful views. Grounds include a small pond, benches, and more great views.

Staff are friendly, attentive and helpful. This and the views are the biggest pluses. They did charge us when asking for extra soap and/or shampoo, which seemed inappropriate, but fees were minimal. There is a small gift shop in the office, for small snacks and gifts.

Breakfast was one prepared item (a tasty little concoction of scrambled eggs and some other stuff), and a lot of available add-ons (the usual bagels, muffins, teas, coffee, etc.). Snacks are also around for midday (popcorn, biscotti, etc.).

Be aware, if you are backpacking in or out, that there are no restaurants within short walking distance for lunch or dinner. There is one place in Twin Lakes, 4.5 miles distant, and beyond that it's a long ways. Don't expect to easily find food nearby if you lack a vehicle.

Overall, the location is great (except for lack of dining), staff friendly, food OK, rooms average and pricing very reasonable ($60-90 per room per night). The cabins are probably much more spacious.
