I completed the Durango - Moab route the beginning of August 2007. Overall I had a great time - nice cycling, beautiful scenery, quiet roads, good physical challenge and outstanding locations for each of the huts. I would recommend such a trip but wanted to share a few thoughts and answer a few questions that I had before I left.
The route is generally over quiet dirt roads - most of them pretty darn smooth but a few with rocks, ditches, etc. Nothing too technical but for those not that experienced mountain biking they will have a bit of a challenge. And talking of challenge - yes, this route has its challenges. I am pretty fit and found the route to be essentially 100% rideable but for those from sea level or those of just average fitness, some walking on the higher elevation, steep and rough roads will be necessary. Not super long stretches but for instance the last few miles into the Geyser Hut when the route changes to a less traveled steep rock filled road at 9,000 many folks will let their feet do the walking on 1/4 - 1/2 mile stretches.
Overall the route description is okay - you will get confused at a few junctions but with an odometer and a few heads together you will get to the hut. My battery went out on my odometer so I primarily used my GPS,. Unfortunately, some of the highlighted map routes were not exactly accurate [okay - there were probably at least 3 total errors] but I did get to each hut without wasting too much time figuring out the way.
The huts are situated extremely well in lovely remote settings and not stashed so far from the road that you have trouble finding them. I give Joe and the crew two thumbs up for their stocking of the huts. Plenty of food, we totally appreciated the beer and generally comfortable bedding and sleeping bags. It would be nice to have a few fold up chairs for inside [or outside] or a picnic table outside though.
Last word of warning, I was really disappointed the last day when i had to skip the last 1/2 day of fun cycling options as a bridge was being rebuilt and my trip notes nor notes in the hut mentioned anything about it [even though the bridge has been under construction for months now]. Rather than having a cool ride through some slickrock country and possibly testing my loaded bike on the Porcupine Rim trail I pedaled 20 miles of 100' pavement into Moab.
Feel free to contact me with any questions you might have.
