“Winter Wonderland”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013 via mobile

We had a great trip to DTR in January for a family wedding and the resort was a class act that provided great service and attention to details that made our stay very enjoyable. Beautiful scenery, nice accommodations, and good service make this resort an each recommendation.

My husband and I did a last-minute trip to Devil's Thumb Ranch to cross-country ski. The skiing was great because the trails are top-notch. But what was incredibly impressive was the customer service of everyone on the ranch staff. I was wow'd. Everyone from the guys who open the front doors to the staff at the restauants -- were amazing. Whoever trains their staff deserves praise and a raise.

We stayed at the Bunkhouse to make the trip more palatable on the pocketbook. Great spot if you want to enjoy an amazing ranch but not spend the $$ for the ranch rooms.

Room Tip: If you stay in the bunkhouse, rooms 7 and 9 are on the 2nd floor and at the end of the hall. I'm...

I cannot say enough about Devil's Thumb Ranch. It is one of my favorite places to vacation in the Colorado Rockies and creates an amazing "Staycation" for us about 3-5 times each ski season.

Things we like the most:
- Comfortable beds & bedding
- Huge bathtub - one room had the bath in front of a window facing out to a view of the Continental Divide, Wow!! (My partner like the pebbled-floor shower better)
- Beautiful lodge with natural wood features
- Staying in the Bunkhouse can be more economical, and there is a full kitchen, but the rooms are a bit less quiet. Staying in the cabins is more romantic, with a fireplace, much more private. But, we like the convenience of being able to walk inside the lodge to the restaurant Heck's, the game room, pool, spa, and pro shop.
- We score great deals on lodge rooms by being members of the email distribution list.
-As far as choosing a room type, they are all great. Even if you want to save some money and stay in a meadow-view room, it is comfortable and luxurious - you can spend plenty of time seeing the views during they day outside of your room.

Activities:
- In the basement of the lodge, there is a game room with bowling, shuffleboard, pool, and bubble hockey - it is so much fun! We invite our local friends over, get some drinks from the bar, and hang out playing games.
- The trail system is great! There is so much land to explore. We have taken lessons and learned to skate ski.
- Taking a sleigh ride is fun, especially the feed ride. It is a good way to see the property and the herd.
- After dinner, go out to the fire pit and roast some marshmallows for s'mores.

We just love a relaxing getaway here and will continue coming back for years to come!

Room Tip: Any room is as comfortable and quiet as the next. Make your decision to stay with a view contingent...

Just returned from a visit to Devil's Thumb with family. The location is absolutely beautiful and there is lots to do for families with kids. We went snow-shoeing, skiing, and had a great sleigh ride. The game room and free movie rentals were also a hit with the kids. Adults enjoyed the spa and the Ranch House restaurant was top notch. My only complaint was that the restaurant Heck's in the lodge was a little disorganized (wait staff were very nice but seemed to need more back-up staff with all the large parties) and could have had more basic and lower-cost options like sandwiches. Kids meals were also pretty basic and didn't include any healthy options like fruit or vegetables. If you want fine dining the Ranch House is a great option. Overall a great trip and would very much like to go back, summer or winter.

Our extended family spent a beautiful celebratory weekend at Devil's Thumb. The beautiful rooms, excellent restaurants and range of activities at the Ranch and nearby provided fun for all ages. Small nooks and library among the rooms provide the warmth of home away from home.

Room Tip: Room size and amenities vary for reasonable prices at the lodge. Ask about options when booking to...

Our stay at Devil's Thumb Ranch was wonderful. The ski trails have beautiful views. We don't have a lot of cross country ski experience, but found the perfect level trail, a bit of a workout, but lots of fun. The resort is so cozy and comfortable. All of the staff are so warm and welcoming. I wished we could have stayed longer. My favorite part was relaxing in the outdoor hot tub while it was snowing! There is a heated pool that we also enjoyed. We saw kids enjoying the pool as well, so it's fun for the whole family. We had dinner at Heck's restaurant in the resort. The food was surprisingly fresh and delicious.

Wow, what an exceptional place to celebrate the holidays. Fabulous rooms with a view, especially of the snow and holiday lighted evergreen trees. Activities to keep everyone engaged from cross country ski/snowshoe trails to horse rides and sleigh rides. Santa even made a stop here on Christmas Eve. The cold outside does not seep into the warm, delightful lodge. The staff are friendly and helpful. Someone is always about if you have a question or request. The dining was superb, with generous portions and a variety of one of a kind dishes. The overall peace and quiet was a welcome rest from the crazy world.
