We stayed in the Sunterra portion of The Village at Steamboat Springs. The first unit they had us in was on the first floor. The first floor has it's benefits in that this portion of the property does not have elevators. But, you do not get the view on this floor and the unit had a smokers smell. My husband cannot tolerate this due to health issues. It was not problem at the front desk. They found us another room, it was on the third floor - up 3 very long flights of stairs. But, once you were up - it was worth the trip. This was an end unit and was layed out slightly differently from the first unit. The view was wonderful and I woke up early every morning to watch the sunrise peak over the mountains with reflections off the ice.
The unit itself was very functional, it had a full kitchen with all needed items. The furniture was in good condtion and all the items appeared to be in good repair. The front desk said that all the Sunterra units were being gutted and remodeled over the summer of 2005. We did not see any immediate need for this in the unit we were in March. But, the units could use some updating of colors and general apperance. They are slightly dated with the style and color of fabrics. There was a distict cowboy attempt of style - but it was not really a very good effort. Also the second bedroom opens up from the loft, it is a large second room with it's own full bathroom. But it does lack some privacy and you could also hear the TV from downstairs if you went to bed early. This was not an issue with us, since the kids slept up in the second bedroom. The master bedroom was in the front of the unit and if you are a late sleeper this could prove a problem in ski season. People clunk in ski boots going down the stairs, I think the 3rd floor room choice helped us out with this issue. Not to many folks up in the corner where we were located. But, if we had keep the first room - I know I would have heard those boots early and quite often. Granted this is a ski vacation - we are not sleepy heads on these vacations!
But, it is worth mentioning if someone has a non-skier in the group. The unit has a mud room at the entry for the storage of skis and boots. They also have a underground garage. A great feature if you happen to get a big dump of powder - you only hope!
The property also has a great indoor pool and hot tub. We never had any issues with the tempture or with having a cold beverage after sking. Our kids felt very welcome and we meet some very nice people at the resort. There is also a larger Hot tub outside that was also popular. They also have a fitness center and other amenties. But, with sking everyday - we only used the pool and hot tubs. The property is co-managed by World Mark and Sunterra. Both companies share the property and it is very well maintained.
Steamboat has unlimited dining options, but during weekends or the peak season you may want to make your dining plans prior to going out. Many places will take reservations and they are sometimes needed. One Friday night we had to go to several places before we found someplace that had less then a hour wait time. We did not have a bad meal in Steamboat and there were some reasonable as well as upscale meals that we enjoyed. The locals are very open to share and do not be afaird to ask - this is not Beaver Creek or Aspen. I have been to both and this has much different feel - it feel's like someplace you could live! Quite a feat for a ski town - so in combination with great sking, a comfortable condo and beautiful sunrises; I think we would have to rate the experince a 10.
