“Ptarmigan a great base”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 25, 2011

We (two middle aged adults and a 12 yo daughter) just got back from Steamboat and were very happy with the Ptarmigan. This was our first real trip out west skiing and wanted a relatively cheap place convenient to the slopes. Mission accomplished.

The decor is mid 70's but everything is clean. It's the basic 2 double bed, chain motel set-up with a tiny coffee maker. Nothing fancy. Great shower. The good parts are the people--nice to a fault and extremely helpful, whether you wanted info on the mountain, stamps, or recommendations on a place to eat. Great common area with roaring fire, good wireless internet access. Excellent on-site restaurant where we ate all our breakfasts and lunches. Food was great, plentiful, reasonalbly priced, and no waiting to sit down. Much better than the busy food courts on the mountain or right at the bottom of the gondola. Nice bar where we played cards in the evenings.

The best part is the location, about 100 yards uphill from the gondola. The hotel will store your skis in a little room next to the slopes. When you come to ski in the morning you push a bell and the ski guy hands you your skis, then you walk ten feet to the snow and off you go. At the end of the day, you can ski right up to the door, ring the bell and the ski guy takes your skis until tomorrow. They had onsite ski rental where we rented everything. You get a 20% discount for staying at the hotel and it is quality equipment. Very convenient if you have to change out the ski boots or buy ski socks, as we did. That being said, the absolute cheapest place to rent is probably Sports Authority, a sporting goods store on Mt Werner Rd.

Couldn't fix our own meals but we were very happy with the little restaurant. They have a nice heated outdoor pool and spa but we were too tired after skiing to use it! We crashed early every night as did everyone else. Lots of families. Lots of convenient parking and shuttle comes to the door.

Overall, great base for a small family who doesn't want to cook!

We got a good deal here but after reading a bunch of online reviews, I wasn't sure what to expect. Some people loved this place, others hated it. But, after seeing it for myself, I have to say it was great! Yes, the decor is a bit out of date, but our room was spacious, the pool was heated, it wasn't crowded or loud, we could ski in & out, and the staff were SO down-to-earth, relaxed, helpful, and fun. It felt like our own private hotel! This place is clean, well-run, friendly, and in a great location.

I stayed at Ptarmagin in March 2009. It is directly on the slope just up hill from the gondola- true ski in ski out. Fabulous location. It is unpretentious and has the intimate feel of a small hotel with all amenities you need. Decor is dated but room is clean. On night of arrival, I was exhausted. Despite the late hour I was able to get a delicious bowl of soup from a sympathetic staff member which made me feel like I had arrived home to ski. Highly recommend such a nice place.

We stayed in a king size suite. The room was dated as are the rest of the resort. There was a VCR player attached to the TV and VCR tapes for rent in a mchine in the lobby. All of the tapes were very old titles. The room did have everything we needed, but it was shoe horned in the space. There is a small pool and a nice hot tub. This resort will be redeveloped in the near future. Don't expect any importments to the resort in the near future.

The sale price of the hotel was the main reason we chose this hotel, otherwise condos were better deals. Another reason were the reviews we read on this site about their great breakfast. That raised our expectations and we were quite disappointed. It was the less than normal fare with only cereal, white bread, and donuts. There was no protein, no yogurt, nothing hot, and nothing really healthy except a fruit bowl of brown bananas.

The room itself was small with mediocre facilities and no current remodeling or upgrades - which we expected. Beds were just ok, linens, towels, and pillows were sub-standard. We liked that the windows opened for fresh air at night and the outside door to the standing-room-only balcony so that we could check what the temperature was like outside. There are stairs to the lobby and more to the room, which is fine for us since we travel light. However, many people won’t like that they cannot use a luggage cart from their car to their room, but would have to make multiple trips up and down stairs to carry everything. We probably will not be staying there again.

My friend and I went up for the Steamboat Balloon Rodeo and we stayed at the Ptarmigan. The room was clean and comfortable. They have VCRs in the room which is a bit of a riot. Our room was hot the first night we were there and cold the second (the heating/cooling window unit wasn't exactly controlled by a thermostat). We also had a room that adjoined another one and could hear quite a lot of what was going on next door. Overall, I would stay there again, it's convenient, reasonable, and the staff was friendly.

Room Tip: I got the room on a blind bid on Hotwire.

We stayed in the summer and it was very nice. Pool was great! Upgraded to a suit for $20 extra a night! Well worth it! Hotel could use a little updating seemed a little old. Very good location right at the base of the skiing village area.
