“We had a great stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2007

We had a great stay for two nights the last week of September, 2007. I booked it as a reward stay and through the Hilton HHonors website I was told that I would have a room with 2 beds, which while a king bed would have been preferred wasn’t the end of the world – especially when I wasn’t paying anything for the room.

When we arrived, it turned out we had something like a suite room with a king bed and a fold out couch, 2 TV’s, microwave, fridge, counter with sink, etc. I also requested in my notes when booking that we have an even numbered room (away from the parking lot and railroad track) and that’s what we received – even as a reward stay. Needless to say I was very pleasantly surprised. The room / hotel also appeared as though it may have been remodeled in the last year or so and was quite clean. It’s possible that the late September timing caught us squarely in the middle of the off season, and the hotel was not over busy, allowing us a room upgrade over what we may have had during ski season or the middle of summer.

As with most / all Hampton Inns, we took advantage of the free morning breakfast and coffee / tea / hot chocolate all day. Nice features when travelling with a child as you never know what they may want to eat.

All in all we had a great stay and I would stay here again. With our HHonors points, the stay cost us nothing.

Just a couple more observations…

- The hotel seems to be located about midway between downtown and the ski village. It worked fine for us, but if you want to stay right next to the mountain, you’ll want to find someplace else.

- Other reviews have noted noise from the train. We only saw the train once, when we were packing to leave. Our two days is a small sample size, but it doesn’t seem that train noise will be too much of a problem.

What amazed me about this hotel was that they had not redone the rooms in the new cushy Hampton style. We have recently stayed in four different Hamptons in CO, MASS. and Iowa and all had been redone with great pillows, duvets etc. It turned out they were in the process of redoing in the week end before Labor Day weekend, which seemed strange..( wouldn't mud season make more sense?). but nobody warned us of the noise and workmen in the hallways, though we were cautioned nervously about the train. The front staff were friendly and seemed efficient otherwise - and the room was clean, though certainly tired.- pillows were rather rocklike. The location was convenient, however, and we ate at the Three Peaks Grill ( ok, not great - i.e., bread was pretty awful) and a wonderful ly reasonable little breakfast cafe on the river, where we could eat outside and the staff was great - the name escapes me.

We stayed for four nights on a Hilton Honors package (our bill was 43 cents for a phone call). Because I was on a free stay, I got the odd-numbered room (although I hadn't figured that out until reading the previous review). We weren't bothered at all by the parking lot, but then again, there wasn't a deisel truck out there. The view past the parking lot is gorgeous. The train does come by early in the morning, but it didn't bother us at all... in a way it added to the charm of it all. Breakfast was great, and so nice to have the paper available. Not only USA Today, but the local Steamboat Today paper which was fun to read, and a good source of finding local deals on things.

The shuttle is nice, but limited (twice back and forth to the ski mountain in the morning and again in the afternoon). Th real bonus is the free city bus service that stops at the end of the Hampton driveway and delivers to many points in downtown and literally at the doorstep of the ski area. Take either the Red or Blue line (the only difference is that the Red line stops at the hospital). They both basically run the same route... a loop at the far end of downtown, down the main street (Lincoln Ave), up to the ski center, another loop, then back again. You can catch a bus just about every 10 minutes all day. We used it extensively.

Beware renting ski equipment: I was told by Cherry Sports (at the mountain) that their price of $38 was "pretty standard" throughout town. Then I found that Ski Haus (near Safeway, two stops from the hotel on the bus) was $19. Then I read in the Steamboat Today paper that Ski Kare had a package for $12.95. I upgraded that package for $5 more and was very please. Ski Kare is at 5th and Lincoln downtown in what looks like a very high end ski shop, with absolutely no signage that says Ski Kare. Be sure to go in and ask.

We wanted to eat one night at the 8th Street Steakhouse... looked fabulous, but it turns out you pay top dollar for a steak that you have to go up and pick out, then stand over a huge hot grill with 1000 other people and cook it yourself. I can choose, cook and serve my own steak at home (and not pay top dollar) so we went across the Yampa River to the Yampa River Yacht Club (an adorable name once you see the tiny river) and had a fabulous meal for about the same price and had a gorgeous view of the river and the super big ski jump.

Without exception every single person we encountered in Steamboat from the hotel staff to the mountain staff to the bus drivers to the shopkeepers to the locals and the tourists was unfailingly helpful, happy, courteous and wonderful.

My older son wanted Pizza Hut one night (near the Safeway), and the other wanted Wendy's. We ended up with all of our food at the Pizza Hut (and me with a Starbucks). While we were waiting for the to-go pizza to be ready I kept thinking any minute the manager would come over and tell us to take our competitor food out of his restaurant. Much to my surprise, he came over and invited us all to have soft drinks on the house. Incredible.

Hampton Inn @ Stramboat Springs, CO
DATE: 2/5/06
The Inn was a very nice place to stay. The accomidations excellent and the entire Inn was immaculate. Service was the best ever. However, if you stay there get an EVEN numbered room. Odd numbered rooms are on the parking lot side. We had a diesel truck (pickup) parked outside our window idiling for 45 mins. The room smelled like a diesel garage. There is also the matter of the coal trains which run during the day and night. The tracks are located about 100 yards from the Inn with a crossing. The result is multiple train whistles during the night and very early morning hours. I believe that if you stay in even numbered rooms, these annoyances will be minimized. IF I go back that will be my strategy.

PROS - Room very clean with adequate ammenities. Complimentary breakfast fairly standard, but good with nice fresh fruit. Lobby area open and clean with fireplace, USA Today available. Hot drinks seemed available all day. Quick check-in, friendly staff. My room had a fireplace that was very cozy. No charge for toll-free calls (that seems strange to have to say, but some hotels do have a connection charge) and free wireless internet access.

CONS - Coffee pot parts didn't fit together (not a big problem since coffee was available in lobby). Good thing the fireplace was nice and cozy warm for the outside temperature in the teens, because the standard room heater/AC/fan didn't work at all (didn't notify the staff about this, but am guessing they would have moved me if I had asked). Internet total price said to include taxes and other charges, but "resort fee" (was near $7 for one day, seemed to be a percentage of the total, based on comparison to other travelers I was with) turned up on the bill. Fee was removed after some persuasion. Just be aware. Hotel shuttle to town was "out of service". A little noise in the hallways on occasion, but seemingly none from neighboring rooms. Trains (2) came by quite early in the AM, but easily remedied by earplugs (might want to keep handy if you are sensitive to noise).

Overall, a nice but short stay. Didn't have opportunity to try any other services.

Recently spent a few days in Steamboat Springs in mid-September for the first time. Our stay at the Hampton Inn was okay, except for the train coming through right next to the hotel. We were very happy with the numerous dining options and have already found several favorites for future stays. Winona's (617 Lincoln Ave) was a great spot for lunch in the heart of downtown. The sandwiches and soup really hit the spot. I understand that they also have a great breakfast. We were directed by locals to Freshies (595 S. Lincoln Ave) for breakfast and were not disappointed. We ate outside both mornings and really enjoyed the food and the fresh air. We had great fun for dinner at Mambo Italiano's (521 Lincoln Ave). The food was excellent, and the atmosphere and our waitress were great. Again, we ate outside and enjoyed the view along the main drag. We also ate dinner at the Cantina (818 Lincoln Avenue) and the dishes were filling and reasonable. We did not have a single bad meal during our stay.

You drive up to this very "non-Hampton" lodge entrance and from there, it just keeps getting better every time you turn around at this place. First, the friendliest employees...every single one smiled, greeted us, and the front desk guy - Jim - always used our name. We could not believe how helpful everyone was. Dinner reservations, arranging a balloon ride, coming over to where we were seated in the lobby and offering hot cookies! Then there was the bed...it looks like a posh bed & breakfast when you walk in and look at this bed with down comforters and pillows AND so comfortable! We wanted a room with a fireplace, so it was a little cozy. But we looked at the "standard" room and it had a living room area, king bed, microwave, frinde & 2 TV's (nice with kids). Back to the service...when we walked down the hall, the maid turned the vacuum off as we passed. Can you say 5-star hotel? The lobby has huge beams everywhere and is itself really large. It has beautiful furnishings and a fireplace. The thought that kept crossing your mind was...THIS is a Hampton? Hampton should make a new category for this hotel - very upscale. Even had bike storage. We were there 7 nights and never stopped being amazed at the service and atmosphere here. You really are family at this hotel. We've been going to Steamboat for years - this is the only place we will stay now.
