“Good location, excellent manager, unfortunately dingy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

Stayed one night in the Alpiner recently. The room is a decent size and is clean, but it is very dated and tired. The property definitely needs an update, and if you compare it to chain hotels in this price range (around $100 a night), it doesn't compare facilities- or amenities-wise (no flat-screen TV, no pool, no breakfast, no updates, etc.).

However, if you stopped there, you would miss what is good about this place. The manager is very nice and accommodating (and honestly wants you to have a great time). In addition, she is a dog lover, and the hotel is dog-friendly! And it is on the main road in Steamboat, so it is close to things to do. You won't get that in many chain hotels.

Great central Steamboat Springs location (no traffic noise).
Highly recommended, will be returning again on our next trip, go and stay you will not be disappointed.

We stayed two nights at the Alpiner, The room was large, the bed comfortable, and most of all the room was clean. The lady that manages the Alpiner is a wealth of information on things to do and see. It is in the middle of the main part of town, walking distance to shops and restaurants. The city runs a free bus service and the Alpiner is right next to a regular stop.
Negatives are; one narrow stairway to the second foor ( no elevator), No breakfast, only coffee, and the whole thing could use a facelift.

The Alpiner is an old hotel, but very clean and well run. You can not beat the location. It is in the very heart of town. The manager of the place, Loy, acts as your own personal concierge. She gets to know her guests personally, and makes you feel like you're staying at her house. Just what I expected from a fellow Oklahoman. It's very small and intimate, with no fluff or frou frou, which keeps the price very reasonable. We will definitely be back.

Stayed here for two nights in late feb and had a great stay. The owner was extremely helpful and friendly and gave me good pointers on where to get good mexican food. The Lodge is right down town and a short walk away from most restaurants. Another bonus is that the bus stop is directly across the street and a free bus to the mountain runs every 10 minutes(very cool if you are a skier wanting to save on parking at the mountain). When i first entered steamboat i had been told to try the western lodge as it was in the same price range. When i went there the owner(guy with an irish accent) was extremely rude so much so that i walked right out. He got upset when i asked to look at a room before paying. At any rate the alpiner was agreat choice and i would say that it was a bargain for the price.

The Alpiner is a very simple motor lodge, basic beds, small bathroom, older decor. However, it is in a great location downtown. We walked everywhere in town and only had to take an easy 10 min bus to the slopes. By far, the best part of this place is Loy, the woman that runs it. Our flights were cancelled due to a snow storm, so we were "stuck" in Steamboat for an extra day (nothing like a flight being cancelled when there is 6 inches of fresh snow!).

When we asked Loy if there was any vacancy for the Saturday night we would be in Steamboat, she told us she was full because of the upcoming storm. Then she told us not to worry, that she could move some people around and find room for us. Not only did she make room for us at the lodge, we were even able to keep our original room. She was incredibly helpful! Without her we would have been desperately trying to find a last minute room for a Saturday night during ski season. Thanks to Loy we were able to enjoy our "extra" day skiing instead of moving hotels.

If I were to return to Steamboat, I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. Thanks again, Loy!

Room Tip: If you bring your own skis with you, you can leave them overnight at the base of the mountain for $5...

Loy, the owner?, is very nice and bends over backwards to make you comfortable. The lodge is in a great location, an easy walk (even in the snow) to many good restaurants and bars. It is only 3 miles from downhill skiing! There is a free bus that stops right in front of the lodge in case you don't want to walk through town or if you want to take it to skiing. The Alpiner Lodge is not a 4 star hotel, but it more than met my needs.
