“Nice stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2013

We stayed in this hotel for our family winter vacation. It is a nice hotel for family, ski in ski out place with ski valey. Multiple places to eat after all day skiing in Snowmass and there is a free bus to Aspen. The hotel staff was very friendly. Rooms were clean. Heated pool and jacuzzi were nice to relax after skiing. Overall, nice experience.

Thank you for posting such a lovely review. There really is nothing better than soaking in the hot tubs slopeside right after a long day of skiing! We’re so glad you enjoyed your stay, and we hope to welcome you back again soon.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2013

I've stayed in Westin hotels across the US and I'd say this one doesn't meet the standards I'd expect. They say they took the previous hotel (Silvertree) down to the studs for the massive renovation last year, but I think they skimped on some aspects.

First, the walls are warped in several areas, which I don't think should happen after only a few months of being renovated. Second, I constantly heard water running through the walls in my room, every second I was in there. It seemed to be coming from a pipe that ran along the outside wall.

By far, the absolute worst thing about this hotel is when you stay on floors 6-8. There are 2 separate elevator banks at the hotel, one off the lobby, and another all the way on the far side of the hotel. In order to reach floors 6-8, you have to take the lobby elevator up to floors 3, 4, or 5 and then walk all the way to the other side of the hotel to catch another elevator up to floors 6-8. Extremely annoying, and makes no sense why they would keep it this way (from the old Silvertree days). If you're going to renovate a hotel, you should do it right, and this was a huge oversight on the part of Westin. I think they should have just torn the whole thing down and started fresh.

Everything just feels like it got a fresh coat of paint, and is already showing signs of major wear and tear after only a few months. I'm not impressed by the renovations, because I think they could have done so much better. There are other hotels (like the Viceroy down the street) that are far better. The only real reason to ever stay here again is for the location, but there are many other options in Snowmass for slopeside lodging and I don't plan to return to this particular Westin.

Room Tip: Do not stay on floors 6-8 so you can avoid long walks and multiple elevators to get to your room.

We appreciate you taking the time to write a review. I sincerely apologize for the frustrations you experienced during your stay and have passed on your concerns to the Executive Team. Being slopeside provides the best access to the slopes, but it also means that a more unique layout is necessary to follow the slope/incline of the mountain. We are trying to clearly communicate the hotel layout to our guests so that it is not a surprise or a disappointment. We have regular guests who request to stay in the main part of the building near the lobby and restaurant, but sometimes guests do request to be in the upper wing, where they can easily access the ski runs through one of the upper entrances. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future as a special guest and exceed you expectations.

The hotel recently underwent a major renovation. We stayed in the Ski in Ski out suite. Daniel at the front desk was a caring first impression of the hotel. He made sure we had everything we needed and informed us of the resort offerings. The entire Concierge staff was extremely helpful from arranging or changing dinner reservation as well as setting up the kids club so we could get a night out. The housekeeping staff had our room clean every day. The bell staff was terrific in arranging rides to and from dinners and the airport. Lastly we ate a wonderful breakfast every day in the hotel.

A wonderful place..in a terrific and location on a world class mountain. As a seasoned traveler I highly recommend this property.

1) We arrived on Saturday and Sunday was supposed to be the first day of skiing. We went down to ski valet (or ski storage rather, because what they call a valet service is not really any of that) and told them that our skies were shipped by UPS and asked them to locate them. We were told they “got it”. Next morning at 8-30 am our skies could not be found. Finally they located them in “receiving” but there was nobody to get them from there. Eventually we received our skies close to 11 am.
2) One week later on the day of departure the skis were given to the ski valet and I personally ensured that my skis are matched to my ski box. Gave $10 tip to the bell boy to pack them and ship them to us via UPS, UPS label was provided too. By the way, the hotel charges you $7 per 15 minutes of internet use to create this label and another $1.50 to print it, but they have no paper in the printer so you have to go and get it yourself. Needless to say, 10 days later when my skies had not arrived I called the hotel to find out they were never shipped. They lost the label, the lock, and the money I gave them to do the job. When I finally got the skis all the rubber bands you use to fold the bindings and straps were lost.
3) “Not possible” and “we are very busy” are common answers in this hotel. You ask for coffee and sugar in the bar: - “We do not have sugar”. Can I have a pen to sign the check: - “We do not have pens” and so forth.
4) If you come to the front desk and see 2 hotel clerks talking to each other you can stare at them all you want and they would not stop talking and WOULD NOT acknowledge you.
5) No necessities in the rooms. No Q-tips, no nail files, shampoos, etc
6) Do not ask for directions or schedules any of the hotel employees. They will ALWAYS get it wrong. There is a direct bus to Aspen Highlands at 8 am but the hotel will tell you to come at 8-15 to take a bus which requires you to connect and move to a different bus. And this goes on.
7) We called the general manager’s phone – received a response from the room director a week later. GM attended “Westin conference”. Really? During the busiest ski weekends in Aspen/Snowmass? I would love to see the agenda for the conference to buy this.

We are very easy to please and usually we are happy with the hotels we stay at. Minor flaws are never a problem. But EVERYTHING with this hotel was upside down. Just read all other 1 star reviews on their website and on the Trip Advisor. It really hurts the brand.

We will never come back to this or any other Westin (and we did stay 25-30 days a year in their hotels…..).

The renovation was definitely needed from Silvertree and for the most part, the updates were nicely done. Our room was nothing fancy and relatively basic but very clean. The staff, for the most part, were very helpful and friendly. The trip was for a meeting and overall, the experience was very positive.

I really liked this resort. One of the best I have been to. The mountain was great. Deep base, but I missed the powder witch is uncontrollable. Rooms looked brand new. Very clean. Service was great. A cocktail waitress by the name of Heather was really plesent every time I went into the Vue witch was the lobby bar. I would recommend this hotel to any one who wants a ski in ski out top notch all around expereance.

So glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us! I will pass on your compliments to Heather – We’re lucky to have her on the team. Please keep us in mind for summer vacations as well – when we go from a ski-in, ski-out hotel to a “hike-in, hike-out” hotel!

If you like to ski this is the place to be. You are almost on the trail. You pick up the skis in the storage place and walk 10 yards and you are on the trail. Location is perfect. The rooms and bathroom are very nice and comfortable. The only con is that depending where your room is that you will have to walk quite a bit from the elevator to your room and even one of our friends have to get two elevators to his. You are so comfortable in this place that you will not go to the other mountains.

Room Tip: Ask how far the room is from the main elevator.

We are so excited to hear how much you enjoyed your stay at the Westin Snowmass Resort. Snowmass is truly the best ski area around, and we are lucky to be sitting right on the slopes. –Though it does make it necessary for that second elevator to get to the rooms that are further up the mountain. We hope that we will see you again for many more ski trips in the future!
