I just returned from six nights at the Stonebridge Inn. Very pleasant stay. Staff was friendly, rooms were clean and quiet.
LOCATION/GROUNDS: The SI is an easy flat walk of maybe 75 yards to Fanny Hill, about halfway between the Village Mall and the Village Express six person chairlift. The SI has one main entrance facing Snowmelt Road - very pretty with large fir trees and a decorative stone bridge. This is the view on their website. As you look at the main entrance photo on the website, the Village Mall is located uphill to the right and the Village Express chair is located directly behind and parallel to the entrance (ski down a few hundred yards at most to load the chair), about 75 yards behind the hotel. Directly behind the hotel is a very nice pool/hot-tub/sauna area, then comes the Stonebridge Condo building, and then the slopes. Parking is very convenient in a surface lot across Snowmelt Road. You can walk to the Village Mall either along Snowmelt Road or up about the equivalent of six flights (out of breath!) of outdoor steps that wind up past other very nice properties next to a stream, through trees, past another hot tub, etc. Most of the walkway is steam heated to prevent snow and ice build-up.
ROOMS: Lobby is on level 4 of 7 floors. We stayed in room 615. Floors appear to be T shaped, with most rooms along the stem of the "T" parallel to Snowmelt Road and the slopes. Odd numbered rooms on the stem face the pool/hot tub area and the Stonebridge Condos. Even numbered rooms have "ridge views" and look out onto a ridge across from skiing, Snowmelt Road and parking. Our room was fairly small but very nicely remodeled and in clean, excellent condition. Two full-sized beds, a combination tv cabinet/dresser, and a very small table with two chairs furnished the room. Good wall reading lamps on both sides of each bed. 25" color tv with lots of cable choices and a VCR. Sink/vanity is outside the bath with a tub/shower combo and toilet. Small coffee pot in room. Our view looked out to pool/hot-tub and we could see the top of the Village Express chairlift towers. I don't believe that any rooms actually have ski slope views.
BREAKFAST: Breakfast is included with the room and was a self-serve affair. We learned to be patient. Choices were okay but things seemed a bit disorganized and there were five minute waits for the toaster and the waffle makers. Supply of plates and spoons ran out daily within 15 minutes of the 7 am opening. Ate my waffle out of a bowl and my cereal with a plastic spoon several mornings. Plenty of seats available though. Breakfast is served in the bar/restaurant area off of the lobby. Nice and bright with views of the pool/sauna area, trees, and other nicely kept properties. Food choices included cereal (Froot Loops, Cheerios, Special K, oatmeal, granola), fruit (apples, bananas, oranges), make-your-own Belgian waffles (with syrup, whipped cream and chocolate sauce), toast, several types of bagels, juice (orange and grapefruit), banana bread, coffee, tea, hot cocoa, fruit yogurt, plain yogurt, cold hard-boiled eggs, some cold cuts, sliced tomatoes, sliced cheese.
DINNER: We only ate off of the very satisfying bar menu. We did not try the very appealing full restaurant menu at the inn's Artisan restaurant. Entrees on the full menu for dinner averaged $22 to $28 - typical for Snowmass. The bar menu has items priced from $7 to $15. Good selection of appetizers and light meals. We had the fried calamari tossed in salad greens, an excellent flat iron steak w salad and shoestring fries for $15, and a good Caesar salad w grilled chicken for $9 (I think). The Maytag blue cheese burger got rave reviews from others.
OTHER: Laundry room was very handy and clean. Three or four sets of washers/dryers, all with timers so you could go back to your room during cycles. I think that the washer was $1.75, dryer $1.50 and box of detergent $.75. Pool/hot-tub/sauna is located together in an open area in between the SI and the Stonebridge Condos. Sauna and showers are divided by men/women in nice little building w changing rooms. Plenty of towels provided there.
STAFF: Staff was friendly and helpful when asked for something but they weren't outstanding. I don't recall a particularly warm welcome or any offer to show us around the hotel or inform us of amenities or to even let us know when and where to go for breakfast. The most frequent contact with staff for me was at breakfast and they seemed overwhelmed and in a hurry - not in the mood to even say "Good morning!"
OTHER RESTAURANTS: Our favorite was Little Annie's in Aspen. Checkered table cloths and the same wood paneling with red painted window frames that I remember from 20+ years ago. Great value. We both had grilled salmon with salad and starch for $17 each. We also ate at the Village Steakhouse - very good meal with a great salad bar, located up the hill in Snowmass Village Mall. And one night we ordered pizza from the one delivery place recommended by the front desk - $18 for an 18" pepperoni. Very good.
