“NOT GOOD”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2011

We went to Grumpy on the recommendation of a train person.

The French onion soup was very good, but then I like French onion soup. My wife and I chose one of their hamburgers, and things went downhill from there.

The hamburgers came quickly, as if from a "keep warm" shelf. The buns were already soggy from the grease on the generous, but mal-shaped chuck of dried meat.. While the buns were close to six inches in diameter, the hamburgers were perhaps four inches across, and sliding around between the lubed-up buns. My wife's first bite stuck like a solid block in her throat, and quite spoiled the event. I finished most of my hamburger before it got too cold and slippery to deal with.

For the $30 we dropped there, we''d rather have gone to the Golden Arches and had a happier train trip.

“Nice people - terrible food!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2011

I think some of the previous reviews must have been written by friends of the restaurant owner. Yes, I agree the servers were very nice and we enjoyed the piano playing but the food was so bad that we hardly ate half of it (and we were hungry after the train ride!). My son had grilled cheese and fries - fries were greasy and soft, undercooked, cheese was plastic-y and tasted bad. My burger was similarly terrible and the onion rings were greasy and again, undercooked. My guess is that they rush the food in order to feed all of the people from the train. Not cheap for all this - you are basically eating Denny's style food for three times the cost. Silverton exists for the tourists so it just may not be possible to get good food here. I would recommend finding a sandwhich shop in Durango, having a picnic lunch in Silverton - and saving yourself the money and aggravation of a bad meal.

“Great food and friendly service--will definitely be back”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2010

The host and servers were all very nice and helpful. They had high chairs at the ready and were especially accommodating with our young children. The food was plentiful and tasted more like home-cooked food than does chain-restaurant-type fare. Considering our trip was in late September a lot of the restaurants were already closed for the season. Luckily Grumpy's was open.

We were in town before the Silverton/Durango train arrived. Before the morning train we were the only ones in the restaurant; after the train arrived all of the tables were full and with more people waiting out the door to be seated. Bottom line: try to get here before or after the train crowd arrives!

Lacey Black is the pianist who plays old timey music here. She does a great job and the music makes it feel like you're eating lunch in 1900.

“Good burgers, quick service & live piano music!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2010

We rode the train up to Silverton and just wanted a quick bite. Grumpy's sat us immediatley and we had our food in less than 10 minutes. Fun, saloon style atmoshere. Our server was very pleasant and helpful. The live, honky-tonk piano music made for a nice lunch. The burgers were very good.
