“Just perfect for what we needed!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

We came to St Augustine for the night and I wanted a place on the beach with a view of the ocean and this was great. The room was more then expected with a couch in it. Would stay in again! Great location too.

Where to begin? First, the location is excellent. We wanted beach privacy, and that is what we got. In addition, we had a great view of the ocean with convenient access to the beach (to carry surfboards, boogie boards, canopy, chairs, cooler, and fishing gear). Yes, there was enough room for all of this in our room. The room was as clean as a beach hotel should be and we equipped to accommodate. The breakfast was good enough to cover our needs (I eat only Primal and had plenty of eggs and sausage). This hotel was also very convenient to dining, shopping, groceries, etc. St. Augustine is just over the bridge. However, what impacted us the most was the welcome and hospitality of the staff, especially Beverly and Vanessa. We felt like family with how they treated us. They know hospitality! We would come back just because of them. We will be here again.

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms on the 2nd floor are the best.

It was wonderful to experience a truly non- "Cookie Cutter" stay at this Hotel. The new management is doing a great job with upgrades and their accommodating ,friendly staff. You actually felt that you were "family" and everyone was happy to see you!!....not just a "room #". The room was pleasant and comfortable...the beach is just across the road and provides true Ocean fun... from shelling,...to just plain relaxing and enjoying the sights and sounds. Breakfast was really well presented with many choices available [really good sausages!] It is in the plans to expand this area. We were invited to join in sharing a freshly-caught shark that was prepared by guests right outside on the grill...It was delicious and a great get together! I would not hesitate recommending this establishment to all who are looking for a special place to spend either one or many days.

Room Tip: Choose what will accommodate your needs,,nice to have a choice!

That was some good tasting shark! I just wanted to write a quick note to say thank you for the kind words. That was a fun weekend - we had a great group in from Tennessee working on homes for a habitat charity and the weather was just perfect. I enjoyed the shark myself and it was a really fun time that night. I heard the story of how they caught that shark and could not stop laughing. I guess a friend of the guy who hooked it jumped in the water to bring it ashore by hand and all I could think of is this crazy guy went into 4-feet deep water with a shark fighting for it's life to pull it in by hand! Great story.

Every day is better and we've had a great summer so far. The hotel is looking great and it really is encouraging to receive reviews like yours. I will be sure to share your words with our whole staff.

Best Regards,
-Mark

We stayed @ Ocean Sands as part of a large group staying in several hotels for a weekend beach wedding. Our friends in other hotels were not happy w/their accomodations and only wished they had booked where we were. The new owners are in the process of renovating this hotel and it is coming along VERY nicely. Our room was nice, clean with a new VERY comfy king size pillow top bed. Bedding was luxurious, a/c ice cold, view of ocean fabulous....they are now installing new carpeting, updating the bathrooms and all the rooms so the entire hotel will be like brand new. Not sure why the comments about the type of sand on the beach would be a reflection on the hotel but you were headed to South Florida, the beach only gets more "shelly" down there!!! Beach was absolutely gorgous and big waves are the norm with the Atlantic Ocean side. Staff was VERY friendly and welcoming. We arrived early on our first day and they even offered us the free breakfast and got our room ready very quickly while we enjoyed the beach. The breakfast far exceeded our expectations. I will definitely stay here again soon and plan to come back often :-)

Room Tip: Oceanview on second floor great!! Quiet rooms even though hotel sold out.

Wow - thank you for all the kind words. You are absolutely right that we are working hard to upgrade the hotel and you touched on most of our plans. We are also installing central air conditioning in all the public spaces and have completed the 2nd floor and should have the first floor done this week. This will address all the mustiness issues reported by some guests. We are also working hard to get all the bathroom vanities replaced and should have new carpeting in the guestrooms and corridors complete very soon.

Please come back again anytime! I think you'll see that the hotel gets nicer with every trip as areas of our renovations are completed. It has been a little bit of a challenge so far because we want to do the work with the least amount of disruption to our current daily guests. I am very happy you enjoyed your stay and left us with so many great comments!

I found Ocean Sounds Beach Inn on trip advisor. Some of the reviews talked about cleanliness concerns, but a majority of the reviews had no concerns in that area.

I booked more than a month in advance so we got a discount.

The staff was very friendly and accommodating.

Upon entering the room, we were smacked in the face with a damp smell. We turned up the AC and that helped a little, but I think eventually we just got used to it. The room was pretty small, but that didn't matter since we were just sleeping in there.

The beach is right across the street and very easy to get to. However, the beach itself is not the easiest on your feet. About 40% of the beach is soft sand that is easy to walk on. The other 60% is covered with little pieces of broken shells that you can walk on, but it is very hard on your feet. However, we
found a nice area that we could set up camp at an enjoy the beach. It was high-tide which made the water pretty rough, but my daughter and I still were able to go out in it and enjoy it.

The breakfast room isn't very big, but they also have three tables outside that seats six. Our family sat out there and enjoyed the sunshine. They had English muffins, bagels, cereal, sausage links, scrambled eggs, hash browns, waffles, yogurt, coffee, juice, and milk. It wasn't Bob Evans, but it was good. What we ate would have cost us about $25 if we had gone out.

If traveling in the area, I would probably see what else was available. However, I wouldn't have any problems staying at the Ocean Sands Beach Inn again.

Thank you for your comments - I sincerely appreciate the feedback. The hotel is in the process of upgrading most of the facilities and addressing both the humidity levels that cause odors and replacing some of the guestroom case goods to better fit the room are priorities.

The sand you mentioned is actually called "Cucina" sand and it does include a lot of shells and other sea creatures such as sharks teeth, conch shells, starfish, and many other sea items that make a walk on the beach a little more interesting as you explore. You might have seen all the people walking along the water staring intently down at the sand - they were actually looking for sharks teeth (a popular local beach walk pastime here) and other shells.

I hope you have the opportunity to come back and try us again in the future and I think you'll find that our hotel is well on it's well to being the "Best in Class" beach hotel in St Augustine!
