We had only heard soothing about this restaurant so decided to try it for ourselves. We were greeted warmly and taken to our seats immediately. We were not given menus to view and it was sometime before we were asked if we would like any drinks. 3 of us ordered drinks with the fourth stating that she would like to choose from the wine menu. The 3 drinks came but the wine order was not taken until reminded. The menus were given to us and were explained well: soup of the day, today's specials, etc. Our orders were taken and we were then asked if we would like to place side orders of vegetables or salad or fries. Three of us made selections from the set menu of 3 courses for 15 pounds one selected from the a la carte menu. I chose whitebait and when it arrived there were about 7 fish deep fried. The Chinese style pork was excellent and a generous portion and the fromage de chevre tart was also well presented and very tasty. The catch of the day which was included on the set menu, was sea bream and served with crushed potatoes which appeared to be deep fried whole new potatoes in their skins, no crushing involved. The additional bowl of vegetables we ordered included asparagus which was delicious and also included carrots and broccoli.
For dessert I ordered the Eton Mess which was really strawberries and cream with some meringue. The creme brulee was wonderful and served with a really tasty mango ice cream - every tart and full of flavour although the plate it was served on was full of finger prints from its transit from kitchen to table.
Unfortunately one of my fellow diners had a piece hard plastic in his peanut brittle dessert. We pointed it out but we were told that the pastry chef wasn't there tonight to find out any more. We received an apology but no offer of anything else. (No charge, reduction on next visit, etc.)
The waiting staff were attentive in checking that all was ok but on occasions they were intrusive interrupting the flow of conversation.
All the food I had was tasty and well presented, however, we all left feeling that the experience did not match the reviews we had heard previously. We will not be rushing back.
