“Nice upgrade, unfortunately upstairs guests had a domestic disturbance”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2010

Booked a 2 night stay off season, Telluride had closed several weeks before and the Ouray hot springs was closed for cleaning so it was quiet in the area. We booked a room but were upgraded to a 2 bedroom suite with living room, full kitchen, jacuzzi tub, fireplace and private hot tub on porch. There was also a large hot tub for all guests, exercise room, lobby area with coffee/tea in the morning.
The upgrade was very nice but unfortunately the first evening the couple upstairs returned home drunk and started a screaming fight with lots of thumps and bumps. Since the front desk was closed and I didn't want to leave the room to find the telephone number for the onsite employee I called the police who responded promptly and took care of the matter. It was all quiet after that. The reception staff apologized to us but it was not their fault.
The next night all was quiet so either they checked out or stopped drinking. We woke to snow the day we left and it was beautiful but the ride to Dolores over the pass by Telluride was a little dicey.
There were spa facilitie, steam and sauna we had access to as well.
In season the prices are much higher.
Lots to do in the area, Black Canyon at the Gunnison Natl. Park and several state parks nearby for hiking.
Not really close to Telluride especially in winter weather but close to Ouray. The San Juan Parkway should only be attempted in good weather or with chains and 4WD as the pass from Silverton gets to almost 12,000 feet with few guardrails not for the faint of heart but breathtaking views.

This was a great trip! We stayed in the Whithouse Room - which faced the San Jan peaks and had a hot tub on the deck. A little bit dark in the room but nice linens and a very comfortbale king bed.

Took a yoga class from Patsy on Sat am - a nice warmup to a bike ride up a county road to Ouray and back - about 22 miles. Excellent food in the restaurant as well!

Also ate dinner at Drake's (great food - unsurpassed service) and Kate's Place - good for breakfast.

Wandered down to the Orvis Hot Springs before we left...nice pools.

I stayed at the Chipeta Inn on the recommendation of a friend to avoid the normal tourist trap, highway frontage lodging as we are touring around the San Juan Skyway in Southwest Colorado; with just a little more effort you can find gems like the Chipeta tucked away in some of the smaller towns like Ridgway. When you pull into the Chipeta you feel like you have entered your own personal sanctuary with the adobe architecture, lush landscaping and pathways that lead to an attractive central courtyard with a tasteful solar heated pool and lounging area - a little slice of unexpected paradise for us.

We stayed in one of the kiva rooms with a balcony (gorgeous views of the mountains), our own personal hot tub (use your imagination), nice bathroom, comfy bed, art work, sitting area, coffee service and even tv (who wants to watch tv when there's hiking, biking, jeeping, golf, hot springs, fishing, yoga, etc, etc). The bed was comfortable, the room was cool and we slept very well. Morning came, and we only had to walk a few steps over to the on-site 4 Corners Cafe for a great breakfast with a great view (they gave us a discount on breakfast too!). We liked the intimate cafe so well, we had dinner there also - wow what a treat! - gourmet menu, attentive staff and a nice local wine selection - I'd give the restaurant a 9.5!!

There is a very nice spa right off of the central courtyard and my wife had a massage and even took a yoga class (her first!) while I slipped away for a little tennis across the street with another guest I met at the restaurant. We walked a couple blocks to town where we found some nice antique shops and sports shops (for me) to browse around in before having lunch at a place down by the river. I guess the only negative I can come up with for staying at the Chipeta is that if you're looking for action and night life, you'll have to drive up the hill to Telluride because Ridgway is pretty quaint and quiet in that regard, but maybe that's OK.

If you want a nice getaway spot around Durango and Telluride, we can highly recommend the Chipeta Sun Lodge.

My wife and I just got back from a two night stay in Ridgway. If you have not been through this mountain town, you have now idea what you are missing. The Chipeta Sun Lodge is off the main highway and backed up to some amazing views. Across the dirt street is a massive park system that I am told is brand new. We were amazed at the attention the staff paid whenever they saw us. We had a couples massage in their spa and I was amazed! I don't get massages but I think I may start... The roof top dining was something that you can't miss. The view, food, cocktails and we made it for some live music! This was a great trip and in Ridgway of all places. What a great resort and a beautiful small town.
We will be back.
Thanks Chipeta...

We stayed here on day one of our road trip. The staff was professional, courteous and attentive. The bed (Tower Room) was the best hotel bed I've ever slept in. Breakfast was delicious and nutritious. Did not take advantage of the spa or fitness center but both looked appealing.

We stayed in a two-bedroom condo. It is a cozy enough place, but don't plan on any luxurious sleeping if you stay here; it's like living in a college dorm. Every footstep of another guest shakes the place; cleaning begins promptly at 8am, with vacuuming, laundry machines, etc. rattling the whole building; guests return after a night on the town, talking and laughing loudly, stomping around, etc.

We actually enjoyed our condo and the staff is friendly. Just don't try to retire early or sleep in--it's not going to happen!
