“Funky sub shop with delicious sandwiches”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2013

Stand in line with the contractors and the business people. Make a mental note of the pastas, cookies, and Italian deli items on the shelves and in the meat case. When you reach the counter, order the Ralph. Wait for your sandwich to be prepared in the back room, while namesake Joe keeps an eye on the proceedings from his wheelchair in the office. When your order arrives, you'll have a delicious hoagie bun filled with a juicy, fennel-enhanced Italian sausage link, roasted onions and peppers, and whatever that remarkable sauce is. If the weather is nice you can eat outside on the picnic table, or do what everybody else does: experience sub sandwich bliss in your pickup truck.

Current location: near the library at 707 S Main St, Pueblo, CO 81004. Phone: (719) 584-3007.

“There 12" sandwich is 12".”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2013

I have lived in Pueblo for 40+ years and didn't know about this local gem. Certainly one of the most interesting places I have been in a long time. These folks make a excellent sandwich. The Ultimate Joe is the bomb! When they say it is 12" long they mean it and it is loaded with meat and cheese and all the fixings, you can't even compare it to a subway sandwich. This sandwich was $7.99 which included a can of pop and a bag of chips. I was full when I ate the first half of it. I took the other half home. They have various other sandwiches they make as well as cookies, candies, local salsas, honey, pastas etc. The friend I was with loves the garlic stuffed olives. This is a take out only location however it is perfectly located to grab a sandwich and head down to the river walk to sit at one of the tables and enjoy a perfect afternoon. I will be back and bring my hubby with me this time.

“The Ultimate Joe, now that's a sammich!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2011

Joe Tomato is a locally owned italian grocery/deli/farmer's market crammed into a tiny block shaped building better suited to a barber shop. Upon entering , the small space seems positively claustrophobic, however the deli-case is instantly inviting encasing interesting sausages, assorted olives, and funky cheeses.

The deli sandwiches are made to order on fresh italian footlong bread which is soft, moist, just a little chewy. I order the Ultimate Joe. My preference is- salami, capicola, turkey, ham, provolone, olives, lettuce, fire roasted peppers and mayo. A footlong will set you back about $8 but will include drink and chips. Joe himself prepares the sandwiches and is rather generous with the meat/cheese.

I cannot eat a whole sandwich. My husband (a big boy) can ONLY finish half!

These sandwiches are perfect for a picnic lunch, cheap date, or to take back to the office. Better yet, they taste better cold the following day (the bread doesn't even get soggy)!

Tip- Joe Tomato is carry out only. It's moved from it's location on Elizabeth to 707 S. Main, near the main library.
