“Great out of the way place near Steamboat Springs”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2010

I booked this place online as part of a getaway my mom and I took to the Rockies. We're the cheap kind of travelers. When we got there the owner let us upgrade the room to one of their King size rooms, because we picked the smallest room orginally. She also gave us a discount on the room since we stayed a couple nights. It was a very nice, clean place overall, our room was spacious and lovely and included a kitchenette with plenty of utensils. The murals in the lobby were awesome. We ended up cooking a meal in our room the 2nd night. Oak Creek 4 miles to the north offers a few restuarants and a nice coffeeshop, and Steamboat Springs is not too far away. The owner was helpful in offering us detours around the area road construction at the time. The inn sits right off the road and the train tracks are very close, but with the windows closed I did not notice any noise. Our room did not have a/c (which we desired in the early evening after a hike), which may be a problem for some travelers. If we were are ever in the area another time we would gladly stay again.

Manager became emotionally stressed out to the point of seeming fragile when asked for what would be routine in other hotels even in this small scale, very local accomodation ,There are many better options withis a few miles in the same price category.

I apologize if the manager was not accommodating to your needs however as I understand the situation, there was a need to store a large item while you had already checked out. As my manager had explained we do not not have the space for this type of request. I am sorry for this inconvenience and hope that you can understand our position on the matter.
Sincerely,
Black Dog Inn

Quite frankly, when we made the reservations for the night it was because nothing was available in Steamboat Springs for a resonable fee. Then when we arrived and saw that the town of Phippsburg, Co. was no more than a very simple crossroads, we thought well here we go again. We had just spent the previous night at a motel in Buena Vista, Co that left a whole lot to be desired!! WOW!!! Were we surprised. We arrived early in the afternoon. The outside of the building was very neat, well kept, and frankly quite attractive. The lady that owned the place was also the one that kept up the place. She was very nice even though she was still in the process of cleaning and preping the rooms from the previous night. We may still have been a bit skeptical as we asked to see the room. We had reserved a king size room. (They only have two.) Once in the room all our worries flew out the door. It was more like a suite than a room. There are three seperate rooms. A very large and pleasantly decorated sleeping area with a king size bed, a plazma tv, and a small table. Next to that room is a kitchenette complete with stove, sink, frig, microwave, and dishes!!! What a deal!! The bathroom was large and very well appointed. Overall, the accomodations for that night would rank right at the top along with any Holiday Inn Express. We would recommend this Inn to any of our famiy or friends. It's only about 30 miles from Steamboat Springs, so if your in the area for skiing in the winter, or simply on a leisurely weekend outing, This would be an outstanding locale for a quiet evening and a peaseful nights sleep.

I've travelled through Phippsburg countless times and finally decided to try staying overnight in town. The Black Dog Inn is definitely not a full service motel. You can't even get in the building before 3:00 if you're not already checked in. But the Inn is clean, comfortable, and very friendly. Not to mention that the wall art in the lobby is extraordinary. You can't eat in Phippsburg, you'll have to drive the four miles to Oak Creek to get a bite to eat. I checked out Shorty's. It's very good. I'll be staying at the Black Dog again when I get a chance.

We are writing in regards to our stay at the Black Dog Inn at Phippsburg, CO.

The room was very clean and very comfortable.

The owner went out of her way to make us comfortable.

The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was very spacious.

I would definitely recommend this as a place to stay anytime that you are in the area.

We came for Hockey games in nearby Oak Creek. We have stayed there twice in the last month. Rooms were clean and owners were very nice. It would have been better if we had won all of our games. We will be back next Hockey season.

This was a very wonderful, small hotel. The owners were extremely nice and helpful with our stay (and dogs)! They have a lovely room setup with kitchen and plenty of space for an individual or a family. The outdoor dog run was absolutely wonderful. Super close to Steamboat and extremely easy access off the high way! The bathtubs are to absolutely DIE for!! Definitely bring your bubble bath!

  • Liked — friendly staff, extremely dog friendly!, wonderful room setup
  • Disliked — small televisions, larger beds
