When we first headed to Grand Junction this summer, it was to visit our adult children and to check out the orchards and wineries in nearby Palisade. They were lovely (especially the peaches, available from July to September -- you almost need two hands to hold some of them and the juice is the sweetest I've ever tasted) but we happened upon Peach Street Distillers in downtown Palisade and were glad we did.
Peach Street distills and sells its own liquor, including vodka, gin, bourbon and brandies -- all made as much as possible using local ingredients. Even though we are not big drinkers, we found the whole experience fascinating from the minute we arrived at the tasting room door. From here, you can see the gleaming copper distiller, rough -hewn counter and barrels stacked neatly along the side. You have a sense of being a guest but also being right where the action is. The owner, Rory, and Davy, the head distiller, are happy to pour tastes and tell the story behind each of their "hand-made" brews. They told us what it takes to produce each one and showed us the machines and the ingredients they use. We tasted all the liquors. The vodka, made from Olathe corn, is smoother than most I've had, with more body or viscosity than you would find in many larger brands. It comes in plain and peach (made with the local peaches). The bourbon was my favorite. It is the first bourbon made in Colorado and won a prize last year. Gin drinkers (I am not one) that were visiting when we were there reported a fragrant, distinctive juniper taste that they liked. The brandies are made in cooperation with local fruit growers and vintners. They are sold all over Colorado and some other states but it is possible to buy bottles right in the tasting room.
We were made to feel completely welcome. Information was available but there was never any hard sell. Locals dropped by to sip at the tables under the umbrellas outside the front door. It was a great stop and fun to find in Palisade which is very small with just a few restaurants and places to sit and relax.
