“Enjoyed the Box Canyon Lodge”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2006

Spent a night at this lodge while touring Colorado. We paid a walk-in rate of $90, one of the better deals we found during our 10 day trip. We had a second floor room with KS bed not far from the outdoor hot tubs. Our room was cozy and warm with a rustic pine decor and included a small fridge and microwave. Not fancy, but well maintained and quite comfortable.

There are 4 outdoor hot tubs located behind the lodge. My husband very much enjoyed taking a soak in a hot tub during a cold rain, under the watchful eye of a curious deer.

We woke to heavy snow and no electricity, but fortunately we had plenty of hot water. My husband was hoping for an early morning soak, but unfortunately the tubs were closed due to the power outage.

Would definitely stay here again with or without electricity!

This place is boxed in by mountains! It is beautiful and has natural spring hot tubs on the property. The rooms are narrow and small. There is NO AIR CONDITIONING! They do supply a fan which we used to bring in some outside air...although it was hot! We were out of the room during the day, so it wasn't too bad. The rooms are faced with natural rock which holds in the heat from the day. I have altitude issues, so being hot was not a pleasant thing for me.
On the positive side....everything smells so good! The linens, the lobby, and even the sample soaps and shampoo smell good. We met Lucy, the deer, who visits regularly and seems very tame. Hopefully, no one has fed her (yea, right).
We went to the Outlaw for steaks...IMO not worth the wait or the price. Cute shops in town. Bachelor mine tour was good...especially the breakfast cooked by 3 ladies in the outdoor grill. They were very personable!

As always, I had a wonderful stay at Box Canyon Lodge. I love the hot tubs on the hillside behind the lodge. The rooms are nice sized and mine had a microwave, refrigerator, and TV with DVD player. The staff has always been very friendly and eager to assist with ideas of things to do in Ouray. I love this place and always stay here when in Ouray.

For Ouray, this may be a 4-star place but it is basically a 2-story motel in a motel ghetto. Although located off the main drag a couple of blocks, the Box Canyon is hard by two other busy properties. The Twin Peaks Best Western is right next door and the Victorian is across the street. But what my wife and I enjoyed about this place were the 4 large wood hot tubs built into the hillside behind the motel. What a find! The natural hot springs were great after a day of hiking or jeeping and it was always possible to find a vacant hot tub (in fact, we wondered why they weren't more occupied). Sometimes a deer or two came up to us while we were soaking.

Our room was tidy and well-appointed (micro, fridge, tv+dvd) but not a place you could really hang out in. The lodge (come on -- it's a motel!) is set up facing the parking and there did not appear to be any public spaces worth hanging out in, aside from the hot tubs. The rooms were also noisy -- you could hear the folks next door, plus (there's no a/c) you had to keep your windows open and could pick up outside noise....like cars starting up at 6 a.m. or other guests walking by your open window. Still...a friendly, well maintained property that probably deserves its high ratings.

If we are ever back in Ouray, we would probably stay there again, if only for the wonderful relaxing hot tubs. One note: Most places in Ouray appear to be motel-type lodgings, with some b&bs and a couple of old hotels thrown in. The historic Beaumont Hotel -- recently remodeled, apparently -- struck us as very interesting, something straight out of John Portman, the father of the courtryard-style hyatts and marriotts. The Beaumont has a soaring (well, maybe 5 stories) interior lobby with walkways facing down into the lobby and a big skylight at the top. You'll recognize the style -- a hundred years before it was incorporated in contemporary business hotels. I think the first Portman was the Atlanta Hyatt.

Our family, mom, dad and two kids, arrived at the Box Canyon Lodge not sure what to expect. We normally stay in chains or more luxury hotels. This lovely little motel was quaint and clean. The staff was so friendly, even before we arrived. The reservationist was so helpful on the phone making sure we had just the right room for us. Some rooms have been redecorated so be sure to ask for one with new furniture.

Our room was small and that is why I can't give the motel 5 stars. The furniture, tv, and refrigerator were new. The beds were adequate and bathroom was small but clean.

Just outside our room were the Hot Springs. We had a great time relaxing in the tubs both nights we were there. Deer frequently came by to lick the salt where the hot springs come out of the ground. The couples staying at Box Canyon didn't seem to mind our children in our hot spring tub but we always used a lower spring and left the springs on the upper levels for the couples to enjoy in peace.

The staff suggested great restaurants, be sure to try the Outlaw Restaurant in Ouray! We enjoyed steaks and piano music while there. The atmosphere was fun and boisterous.

The staff at Box Canyon keeps hummingbird feeders full and the hummingbirds abound. We had fun assisting in filling the feeders and holding them for the birds. The birds came right over to us if we held the feeder still.

We drove the Million Dollar highway all the way to Durango as there wasn't anything to do in Silverton and it was early in the day so we drove on. We loved Durango and white water rafted on the spur of the moment. We drove back wet but happy. What a fun day! I would suggest that you make the beautiful drive to Durango and stay in both towns if you have the time!

This is definitely a great place for couples and families.

This is the best hotel stay I have had in years. Beautiful lobby, helpful and friendly staff, Awesome views. The mini suite is perfect. The bedroom is as big as my own at home and the cleanliness was outstanding. The little kitchenette area was perfect and there were two TV sets. This place is warm, cozy, and the hot springs are memorable. Many GREAT restaurants within walking distance.

As good as advertised in the Trip Advisor Reviews. Ouray is truly fantastic and this is the best location in town. The hot springs are wonderful and you are a walk away from the Box Canyon trail. You can also walk to town. Yet it is still very quiet. The rooms are typical for a hotel of this class but they are very clean and comfortable. Go to Ouray!
