“Not a Stranger in the Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2012

Smiles everywhere and great local mix of merry makers featuring an unexpected top restaurant cuisine and generous bar. The lowly eggplant is one of the stars, but Walleye and steaks of fine reputation are served up. In the end we felt like locals also--well fed ones too!

“First time in the new location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2012

First of all, let me say that I absolutely love Ted Nelson. He is one of the most kind and wonderful restaurant owners in the Montrose area and an excellent chef. I was a big fan of his old location and loved going there, so decided to check out the new place, one week after reopening in the old Garlic Mike's location on Main St. I went on a night that coincided with a high school event so the place was pretty crowded. The atmosphere was disappointing - bare bones decor, no tablecloths and the chairs looked like they came straight out of a garage sale, but hey, we were there for the food, so one could overlook the decor, and also had to keep in mind this is only the first week of reopening in the new place. Maybe he's shooting for "rustic steakhouse look" or the barn look. However, the temperature in the restaurant was uncomfortably warm - even to the point of appetite suppressing!
Next on to service. We were seated promptly, but 10 minutes into our visit, a waitress was yet to come by and we still hadn't even been served water. I was commenting on this to my companion when a busboy walked by, and soon after, a waitress appeared. She was friendly, but made some glaring mistakes during the service. The dinner salad was lack-luster, not up to the usual Ted's, but mine also came with burnt croutons, which I swept aside, and went unnoticed by the server, as well as the kitchen staff. Burnt croutons? C'mon, really?!? The steaks we ordered with great anticipation, always having had excellent steaks at the former location, were tough. Not overcooked, but tough, flavorless, and really difficult to chew. The potato came with sour cream, no butter, and the butter that came with the bread dish was inadequate to add to our potatoes. Also, speaking of bread, we were only given 1 bread plate for 2 people. Another glaring error in my opinion. The veggies were cooked to the point of sogginess and well, just greasy and slathered with butter. Again, not up to the usual Ted standards. After we had finished our dinners and the plates were cleared, a server came by and asked if we wanted more butter. Huh? Where was he 15 minutes earlier? A dessert sample came out after the meal was over which was excellent, but the rest of the meal left us disappointed and wondering what happened to the quality service and excellent food we had come to expect from Ted's. It was our 15th anniversary - so we were there to celebrate an occasion, but we left sweating from the over-heated restaurant and less than thrilled about the service and food we really hadn't enjoyed. I would have given Ted's a 5 star rating in the past at the former location, but until he gets some of these quirks worked out, I can only give him an average rating. Please Ted, fix these things and go back to being the best restaurant in Montrose - or you'll be letting a lot of loyal customers down.

Ted's is in the process of moving. We have missed going there. The food is always delicious, and the staff is attentive and friendly.
