My boyfriend and I stayed here in late September 2012 for one night. I wish we had canceled the rest of our trip and stayed here the entire time. Brett and Mo were the best (I'm a photographer and I even offered to take photos of Brett for a competition he was entering to be Santa in Japan! How many people can say they met Santa on vacation? Haha. Hope you won it, Brett!) They were warm and inviting and willing to try and accommodate any need you may have. Breakfast was incredible, so much good food we left totally stuffed. I think he made a quiche that morning, and there were also bagels and yogurt and fresh fruit. Yum!
As far as the accommodations go, they were impeccable. There are three properties adjacent to one another, each being a little different, with breakfast in the main house. I'm glad we stayed at Red Crags. It's the Victorian one of the three and totally up my alley. The house is decorated in Victorian finest, with rich velvet sofas and dark wood. We stayed in the Cara Bell room, Dr.Bell's (the original owner/builder of the house) wife's room. We had our own fireplace and the room itself was large with a queen bed. Oh the bed...I don't even want to think about the bed because it will make me miss it. I have NEVER slept so well in my life. I'm not exaggerating. Seriously, I was out like a light. The beds have a down feather duvet that puffs up in the middle like a bubble on the bed. You lay on top of it and kind of fan the feathers out (like you're making a snow angel). Once you get in it's like you're on your own personal cloud. I don't know what the mattress was or where I could get a bed like this but it was pure bliss. The room itself smelled of lavender, which is also relaxing and wonderful. The bathroom was located across the hall (but private, none of the other guests would use it), which was fine with us, though a bit small, so maybe a larger person would have trouble.
They are located pretty close to everything you could want in Manitou Springs (Cog Railroad, Garden of the Gods, downtown Manitou Springs which is super cute!) The views from the house are also the best of the three houses, since this one is at the corner of the street on a hilltop over the trees. The yard is beautiful I'm sure at a different time of the year (going into winter everything was a bit brown), but there were tons of little trails and places you could sit and enjoy a coffee or picnic. I really do wish we had more time to enjoy the house and the grounds, hopefully next time. There's supposedly a trail to get from Red Crags to the main house for breakfast, but we couldn't figure it out and gave up. I'll have to ask Mo next time, she said she takes it every morning.
We were there during off season so we had the ENTIRE house to ourselves. Imagine, having an amazing Victorian house to yourself. We spent the evening exploring the houses other rooms (I think I'll stay in the Teddy Roosevelt room next time, the tub looks awesome!), playing chess downstairs in one of the sitting rooms, and ate our dinner by candlelight on the patio. It was truly a magical stay. I wish I could work/live there, I definitely would! I WILL be back, for a longer stay next time. Thanks for everything, you guys!
Any of the rooms are amazing. Really, you can't go wrong. (Dr.Bell's room downstairs didn...
