If you've read some of my other reviews, you know that my husband and I are always searching for a good German-style restaurant.
We recently moved to Longmont and decided to try out Andrea's (despite their pricey reputation). I mistakenly assumed their Brunch menu would be a little cheaper than the dinner, but it was basically the same menu with some breakfast items thrown in.
I tried the potato pancakes (a favorite of mine) w/ homemade applesauce. I have to admit the applesauce was Delicous, but the pancakes were not. They were bascially American style hashbrowns with a lot of egg as the adherent, and they tasted like greasy scrambled eggs. Yuck. My idea of good German pancakes (kartoffelpuffer) do use egg and flour, but they are much more pancake-like, and the potatoes are generally mashed or blended into the mixture.
I also had a brotchen on the side, because I had to see if they actually had authentic bread rolls. Which they didn't. It was a kaiser roll minus the seeds on top.
If you've never had European style bread, let me tell you, you will NEVER eat anything else. You will insist on living on bread alone. Their bread is so good you will eat the whole thing right in the store and order 5 more loaves. Their hard rolls are perfectly crisp and crunchy on the outside with a delightful steamy and puffy inside. I have searched high and low for anything similar, and nothing can ever compare, certainly not the crummy breadroll they gave me, and definitely not Schmidts in Loveland (disgusting).
My husband had kasespatzle with a brat and fries on the side. The brat was exactly what you can buy in any supermarket. The fries and spatzle were pretty good, but again, more American style.
The service was not very good. I had to wait about 20 minutes to get my tiny 3 inch tall glass of water refilled, and at the end I was going to order espresso and apple streudel, but the waitress just took our plates and dropped the check on the table.
(no matter how bad the food is, I ALWAYS have to try the struedel, just in case it's fantastic and then I know I can always just come for desert)
I know this restaurant has a very loyal following. I didn't try their American food items, so I can't give you a thumbs up or down, but if you are looking for good German style food, this is not the place.
