They're pimping the kids.
Went to the Rib House with my friend this evening, we were discussing how much one ought to tip when not at a "full service" restaurant. I always tip generous unless there is some definitive reason not to, these people have to deal with a lot in the food service industry. As we were walking away from the counter, I saw a sign that said "TIPS." Expecting it to have an answer to my friends inquiry, I read it. It was some little quip about how we would all treat each other better if we were always acting if we were in the pursuit of a tip and OH By the way (in small print at the bottom it says . . .) The owners pocket all the tips "to offset the cost of feeding the staff." WHAT?! Really? I just paid the owners $25 for my friend and I's 2 pork sandwiches, I expected that when I wrote in the tip on my credit card receipt that that money would go to the softspoken kind young man behind the counter and the cute little blond who gladly got my friend and I more sauce for our sandwiches. I DO NOT INTEND TO GIVE MY TIP TO THE OWNERS!! IT'S FOR THE KIDS ON THE FRONTLINE!! So these kids get paid $.50 over minimum wage and one meal per shift. I think this is a REALLY BAD POLICY!! When I leave a tip, I fully intend it to go to my server, not his or her boss. I would say add an extra little bit to the cost of the food, continue paying for the staff meals, and let them keep their tips, except that they obviously are already including the cost of the extra food that goes out with the $10 price tag on a sandwich.
So, by all means, go and enjoy your BBQ, but use good discretion when leaving a tip, who do you intend it to go to.
