“Western Ridge Resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

Our Camping group has stayed at Western Ridge Resort in years past as well as this July. We will return In August as a group. My hubby, I and 2 other couples plan to go up a few days ahead of our group. Because we really enjoy the peace, quiet and convenience of this resort. The pool is refreshing and quite handy to the restaurant as well as the camping area

4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

Wife, two small kids, and I enjoyed Labor Day weekend staying at Western Ridge Resort. I will admit, I was a bit nervous about the place after booking, but kept on telling myself to give it a chance and it'll be just fine. They do not have much of a website if you can even call it a website. The pictures and descriptions were quite vague and one of the descriptions is rather misleading. I was still nervous upon arrival since it is a very ho-hum type of resort (especially now that it's less than a mile from the High Park Fire Burn area, which occurred in June of 2012...the resort was not affected). While it is less than 2 miles after you make the turn off Hwy 287 onto Red Feather Lakes Road, it is still about 15 miles from the main RFL area.

But, we were very pleasantly surprised! We booked the largest cabin at the resort which is called The Bunkhouse. It is a two-bedroom cabin with a fully stocked kitchen, a renovated bathroom, and large living room. There is plenty of room for the kids to run around. Let's just say it's not cramped by any means. The kitchen appliances are probably from our grandparent's era, but they all worked just fine. One of the bigger disappointments I had about the cabin was that there was no satellite TV. It is DVD/VCR only (or bring your own game systems or cameras and plug them directly into the TV). There is a satellite receiver, but it is out of service. Having actual TV would have come in very handy (especially for watching football on the Sunday we were there). They do not emphasize this on the website so make sure you bring plenty of entertainment from home.

The master bedroom has a very comfortable king size bed and the bedroom has two twin-size beds...perfect for the kids. There is a walk-through closet between the two bedrooms so that helps for additional closet space, plus something fun for kids to mess around with and hide in.

They also have a BBQ grill which we did use and it is a newer model so it worked perfectly. It's really great to have; this is a nice addition.

As far as the resort goes, they tell you on the website that it is ON a lake. Well, the "lake" is about the size of a pond and it's inaccessible from the resort as it is private property. So if you are planning on staying here in hopes of having access to a nearby lake, I'd recommend finding something actually IN RFL. This lake that is nearby really doesn't add much value to the resort.

There is a restaurant onsite! The prices are very reasonable and the food is quite good. There's also a very small "convenience" store at the restaurant that sells some small gifts and a few snacks, drinks, and toiletries. This can definitely come in mighty handy instead of getting back in the car to go to RFL, or 2 miles east to the closest gas station in Livermore. But it's still good to make sure you have plenty of food and toiletries with you before arriving.

Western Ridge is also an RV park and very horse-owner friendly. If you do plan on doing some horseback riding in the RFL area, this place is perfect for that. They do have some camp-sites, but it is primitive camping as there are no hook-ups for water or electricity. The campsites are few and next to the cabins and RV sites.

And finally, the swimming pool. If you like unheated pools in an alpine environment, this is for you. In other words, it's very cold water! Most kids would probably care less about the temperature of the water (especially when there's a slide there) but my wife and I could barely stand it. It does need some improvement as well since the deck area and even the bottom of the pool were chipping and wearing out in spots. They may as well push for a heated pool if they do decide to do improvements.

So if you are looking for a very quiet, remote, affordable resort in the RFL region, and don't mind driving a ways into the main RFL area, I do recommend Western Ridge. I especially recommend it if you have kids as the Bunkhouse is the way to go. The smaller cabins are perfect for couples looking for a quiet getaway.
