I have stayed at many historic hotels and was looking forward to my stay here...It is really a shame what has happened at this hotel. It is like staying in a flea market -- no elegance at all. The lobby is filled with clothing racks, boxes, and so many non-related items for sale that you feel as if you are in a distress sale. It has hard to move about the lobby without tripping. Everything in the hotel is for sale and they have tons of it! Decor, antiques, collectibles, clothing, the list goes on and on...and it isn't just in the lobby...the halls upstairs, the guest rooms, the breakfast area --- pricetags everywhere and loaded with merchandise. In terribly bad taste. The room was also not as promised - very small, badly furnished, horrendous bath and shower with a sink stuck in the room. And the king mattress was only four inches thick -- very cheap make with a board underneath -- no box spring!! Incredibly uncomfortable. Worst night of my entire journey through the state.

It is a wonderfully historic hotel. We asked for a room on the back side away from the street. We had a corner room with windows on 2 walls, and the air was fresh and crisp. The quiet was so great. You could not hear anything but the peacefulness of the area.

The showers are small, but lots of hot water with a lot or pressure, and the water warms up the small bath nicely.

We loved it. It was just great. It had all of the small things that make a historical hotel comfortable. It is not a fancy new hotel. It's little going backward in time with a few creature comforts.

Dinner at Quincy's is the best. Great food, service, price and ambiance.

  • Liked — The comfort and quiet.

If you like historic hotels, you'll probably like the Delaware. I have stayed there on two seperate occasions in the past year. I've used it as a base for climbing Mts. Elbert and Massive. The place is charming and full of character. The staff is very friendly. As a 120 year old hotel, it's pretty creaky and noisy. I recommend staying on the top floor (although you'll have to climb two flights of stairs). By the way, I recommend having dinner at Quincy's. It's the best deal for steak I've ever found anywhere (filet, salad and potato for $10-$15, depending on size of cut).

I use to be a "maid" at the Delaware Hotel back in the early 70's before it was renovated. It was a wonderful old place then and still is. However, I feel lucky to have been there when it was still all just as it had been in the 1800's. There weren't many people staying there in the 70's since tourism wasn't what it is today (anywhere!). Finally my husband and I stayed there in 1999 and found it much as the other reviewers have described it: small, charming and slightly ghostish! I was glad I hadn't known that back when I was a 17 year old cleaning all by myself, vacuuming that looong, wide upstairs hallway!
I recommend the Delaware to history lovers as well as all of Leadville. It's a true gem and the scenery is magnificent.

My husband and I stayed here in March 2004 and got a great deal on a ski/lodging package. The staff is WONDERFUL! They were so nice to us, personable, and flexible when we decided to change ski resorts at the last minute. The breakfast in the morning was good, enough to fill us up before we left for the slopes. The rooms are small, but it is a historic, old-fashioned place. We had a queen sized bed, the room was very clean, and fun if you like antiques. They do have suites and family rooms avaliable if you want a bigger room, but the queen room was just perfect for the two of us. The place was a little spooky at night, probably didn't help overhearing all the ghost stories, but it was a great place to stay.
