“Train Ride”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

Nice scenery. A little expensive for our family. I like the variety of viewing areas offered. It's nice that you can go into an enclosed car if you get chilly.

“Unplanned Fun”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2013

My wife and I had just spent the night at Leadville and were walking around the town, planning to leave soon, when we saw a sign that said "Railroad, two blocks" with an arrow pointing north. On a whim, we walked up and saw people buying tickets at a quaint old railroad depot. We asked when the next train was leaving and found that it was due to leave in 30min. The price was right so we jumped on. The train has a few closed cars, a few open cars, and a car with a snack bar, a few souvenirs, and very basic restrooms.

The train moved slowly along ridges and along the sides of the mountains for about an hour and then returns. The scenery was spectacular. I think we took 120 photos. There is a stop at a old water tower and the guide will take your picture beside it. The guide was very personable and knowledgeable, showing us abandoned towns, camps, naming the river and the mountains.

This is the highest train in the US, running at an average altitude of 10,000ft. It is not to be missed. If you are driving across Colorado on I-70, it is just a half hour south of the Vail area on route 24.

“Leadville, CO Southern Railroad ride”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2013

My family and I drove to Leadville, CO and rode the Southern Railroad train for the scenic trip. The trip was very nice and had a lot of scenery. The commentator was very knowledgeable and very friendly. The only issue was that some of the trip was between some fairly thick trees so there was at times a limited view. However, overall it was definitely worth going out of the way for the ride. We did this ride in late September and was glad that we had coats and gloves because it got a little chilly at the higher altitude.

“Lots of history here”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2012

I rated Leadville as very good because it is a little town busting with history. Leadville was once occupied by over 100,000 people and was nearly the capital of Colorado. Lots and lots of history.

“Leadville Day Trip = Sit Back, Relax and Enjoy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2012

We took an excursion from Aspen in the fall. This area comes alive with brilliant hues of orange and red in the fall. Our trip began with a drive over Independence Pass, over the top of the Continental Divide and into Twin Lakes. We arrived in Leadville in time for a lunch stop. We chose to eat at the Hotel Delaware with great kid options. Our waiter was very friendly and the food was exactly what we'd hoped.

We made our way to the ticket office for our railway excursion. It housed great memorabilia and a gift shop. Loading the train and selecting our seats was most exciting for the kids...we opted for an inside seat to stay out of direct sunlight. The train cars offered great views, whether inside or out. Also there was a restroom car and a gift/snack car for those needs along the way. The train ride followed the high line up Freemont Pass, therefore, wasn't a fast ride by any means. We did stroll onto the outside cars for a bit, we took in the gift shop and, when the train stopped before the return trip, we got some great photos with the kids on the engine car and they enjoyed a little free play around the old water tower. There were some wildlife viewings along the way but we were not fast enough to catch them as we moved along the rails. Back at the ticket office, we ventured into the gift shop to select an item for each of the kids. Needless to say, they quickly zonked once in the car and on our way back to Aspen.

I would definitely recommend this excursion for families visiting the area with smaller kids. The friendly staff and great weather made it a memorable occasion for ours!
