“It is like being at a great summer camp with your kids.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2009

2009 was our second trip to Latigo. It is a unique and bonding experience for the entire family. The aspect that I find so interesting is the ability of the owners and wranglers to make the horse-riding work for seemingly every age and level of experience. In 2009, we found that as a whole the other guest were more inexperienced riders then we were. We did not mention this and attended the training along with everyone else on Monday morning. Somehow the staff picked up on it, and within a day they had my husband and me on an adventure to herd a few cows from a neighboring ranch up and down the side of a mountain or 2. We felt like the man from snowy river. Now, we were not any help and likely just a nuisance, but we were made to feel like we were fine help! For us, it was a special experience. Most of all, we were so impressed at how they recognized an opportunity to make it especially fun for us and took it, while also paying equal attention to our 8 year old newly learning-rider. We love Latigo and will likely return in 2010.

We’ve been to Latigo five times since 2001, three years in a row since 2007. We’ve been in early June, late July, and early September. Each season is different and has its own special allure. However, there are many elements of the Latigo experience that, regardless of the season, never change.

The owners and hosts, Kathie and Jim Yost, and Lisa and Randy George, along with their families, wranglers and entire staff, are welcoming, friendly, and accommodating in every way. The ranch’s atmosphere is relaxed but the operation is entirely professional. There is nothing contrived or pretentious about Latigo. Everything about the ranch and the people who work there is genuine. The Latigo folks have been in the guest ranch business for years and it clearly shows.

Their attentiveness to their guests’ riding abilities and preferences make for a truly enjoyable week on horseback. The wranglers are both skilled and knowledgeable. Latigo’s horses are well-trained and well cared for. Latigo’s impressive trails offer spectacular panoramic views, quiet forests, and mountain meadows, with wildlife sightings on virtually every ride.

The food is plentiful, delicious, and healthy. There are main course choices for every meal. Fresh fruits and vegetables, along with homemade breads and desserts, make every meal extra special.

Through the years, before we discovered Latigo, we had stayed at ranches in Arizona, Montana, and British Columbia. None has compared to Latigo. We usually take one vacation each year and Latigo is it.

My 12 year old son and I LOVED Latigo. The people are very warm and friendly. They make a genuine effort to upgrade everyone's riding skills. The horses are very well trained and sensitive. we had great activities inclduing literally rounding up cattle - which turned out to be lots of fun! The ranch setting is beautiful. The food is excellent. The cabins are upscale rustic. (I got WIFI in the cabin.) The other guests were interesting, open, friendly. This is our second Dude ranch experience - Latigo is in a totally different class - although last time my family of 6 also tried to get a great family ranch. We are dreaming of returning and bringing the whole family.

This was our third trip to this ranch. Lat year we brought our grandkids for the first time. As soon as we got in the car to leave they were asking to come back, so we did! Jim and Kathy, Randy and Lisa are great hosts. Everything from food preferences to riding are given personal attention. This is no cookie cutter ranch where you are herded like cattle! The food is excellent, the cabins are cozy and the vistas are indescribable. If you want an experience of a lifetime, head to Latigo Ranch. You'll want to keep coming back year after year, as we have!

What a wonderful family ranch. Everything exceeded our expectations. All the staff were friendly, the horses were well trained and very well taken care of, the food was fresh and beautifully prepared (with so much choice!), the children felt welcomed and comfortable in all situations, the pace of all the activities was perfect. I can't say enough good things about the whole week. I highly recommend Latigo Ranch to anyone that would like a truly remarkable dude ranch experience.

Be ready to have an incredible time with your family and meet new friends at Latigo. We went with our 4 children, ages 7-20 and had a such a great time as a family. The owners are involved in every aspect of the week and their TLC is evident everywhere. The accomodations are quaint and wonderful cabins. They are VERY clean and comfortable. Our cabin had 3 bedrooms and 1 bath. There was an additional sink in the master which was a nice bonus. Maid service comes everyday to freshen up everything and refill the snack cannister with homemade carmel corn. Do not plan on dieting while you are there. Although there are plenty of healthy things to eat, you will want to sample it all. A few of the things they served were prime rib, salmon, fajitas, calzones, homemade bread, daily cooked to order breakfast, and always delicious homemade desserts. Horseback riding is their specialty. They do not tire of teaching you how to ride and taking you on rides tailored to your needs and wants. The trails they have groomed provide specatular views of both mountains and wild flowers. There is a stocked pond for trout fishing that my husband spent several hours fishing and enjoying. The additional bonus was just getting to know the staff and other families that were there. We couldn't have asked for a nicer family vacation.

Our family has just come back from our eighth year at Latigo, so clearly we are thrilled with the place. Our children were 10 and 8 when we first came-- ages at which they can benefit from the instruction of the wranglers to improve their horsemanship and get the most out of the riding experience. These are not nose-to-tail rides across a dusty plain, but rides where small groups go with a wrangler and learn as little or as much as they want to about horseback riding, all through spectacular scenery on the western slope of the Rockies. When we arrived, we knew next to nothing about riding. Now, although we ride but once a year (at Latigo), we feel very competent on horseback which allows us to take some more adventuresome rides and cover more of this beautiful place. Latigo's seclusion is a real plus as well. The ranch is essentially surrounded by national forest which the ranch accesses for trail rides. In all our years visiting we have seen about ten people not from the ranch itself. The staff takes care of all meals and housekeeping chores, so you can relax and enjoy the other guests, the scenery, the food and the peacefulness. The food is abundant and delicious. Since there are at most 30-35 guests per week, they can accommodate special requests and not just serve chow. You really feel included by everyone there. Latigo has a special hard-to-describe feeling (see the "soul" comment above). That should be something you are looking for if you go there. It is not a place where the kids play video games, and the adults go to the nightclub. It is a place where kids learn a lot about the natural world and adults don't have to worry about their kids. Hopefully, we will be going for a long time to come.
