“Gastronomic paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2014

Two people had independently recommended this place so we had high expectations but they were not disappointed. Wonderful food, gorgeous setting, and a really good attitude by management and staff. We went off-season so not everything advertised was available but that still left plenty to choose from and do - plus it was quiet which we liked.

We stayed at Hideaway for three nights in March 2014. We'd just arrived in Arugam Bay after a long and hot drive from Sigirya. We wanted to look around and find a nice spot,so when we wandered into Hideaway and the owner invited us to sit down, have a beer and watch the cricket, we knew we'd found paradise. The cabanas are some of the nicest accommodation you will find in Sri Lanka, with an amazing open air bathroom and shower. Our room was cleaned daily and we were able to relax on the comfy leather chairs or day beds in the garden. The owners were incredible knowledgeable and helpful in organising a tour to Yala East National Park (a must-see and quieter version of Yala), as well as other activities. Even though it was low-season and we didn't spend much time on the beach, we ate well, drank well and had an amazing time. I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Arugam Bay! Thanks guys.

We went to Hideaway in early January, 2014, we planned to stay for one night and enjoyed it so much we ended up staying for four. The tropical setting is really pretty and the rooms are great. This resort had by far the best fittings, fixtures and setting than any other we visited and we went around the whole Island including Jaffna. The food is yummy and the price was very reasonable,
the jumbo prawns were amazing!! The staff were friendly and went out of their way to be helpful. When we had issues with our driver, Sharon arranged a new one for us and negotiated a fair rate. Hideaway is across the road from the beach, however I think this is better than being on the beach as it is less noisy. Thanks to everyone at Hideaway for a great time, see you in a few years.

Room Tip: The smaller cabins are a little fancier.

Arugam Bay at Christmas is not ideal for women travelling alone or families with children. This is out of season so there are fewer foreign tourists and although there is much friendly curiosity there is also a menacing feel to the place. Whenever my wife (not provocatively-dressed and aged 50) was on her own she was subject to groups of men trying to entice her away down 'dark alleys'. Also groups of young men intimidated my 12 year old son trying to take his surfboard on a number of occasions! I was told that the Arugam Bay locals are used to foreigners but Sri Lankan visitors from other villages are those responsible for behaving in a predatory way towards foreign tourists. It is not the most relaxing of atmospheres. Also on occasions the army patrol the beaches which certainly serves to clear the beach of any Sri Lankan tourists!

Hideaway is not on the beach however it is located in a quiet zone close to the beach and with a very nice garden. Hideaway staff are very pleasant and attentive. The food is good although expensive for Sri Lanka. The rooms in the main villa are acceptable standard although I think 'boutique' hotel is an excessively glamorous description. It may be better to stay in one of the cabins. (On the whole accommodation is over-priced in Sri Lanka when compared to elsewhere in Asia.) I think Hideaway is a good place to stay when compared to elsewhere in Arugam Bay.

The management is anxious for you to use the expensive taxi service they advertise. I would strongly recommend your resist their advice as not only was it 25% more expensive but the driver was young and careless and on a number of occasions we were certain we were going to meet our death due to his dangerous driving.

Room Tip: Try the cabins in the garden

We stayed here for 5 nights in early October 2013 and can't speak highly enough of the time. Not only was the room amazing, the food was also some of the best you'll eat and the service was personable and caring. By the end of the trip we felt like part of the family.
We had the misfortune of accidentally leaving an iphone, passport and a charger locked in the safe of our room while we headed onto Mirissa. Thankfully at no stage was I worried about the actual items safety as I knew how l trustworthy all of the hideaway staff are, the owner organised a bike delivery driver to drop them to our accommodation in Mirissa so we could continue on with our trip.
I highly recommend that you stay here and enjoy being looked after. We even managed to do a safari from here in Tissa East National Park and managed to skip the super busy main safari park which is reached from Tissa.

Room Tip: We went for the air conditioned garden bungalow that came complete with hand painted doors and shutt...

I spent fantastic week here.

We were looking for a place to stay in Arugam Bay and there were just no competitors. It is lovingly decorated, hidden from the main street and professional and attentive service.

Owner is a lovely lady and you can have interesting chats and find out about the history and traditions.

If you want to dine anywhere in Arugam dont try other places. They don't compare to this - best food.

Room Tip: Noisy bird outside one evening :)

We had high expectations coming from the heat of Abu Dhabi, trekking across from Kandy with two small kids, and arriving at A Bay. We had actually considered altogether cancelling this part of the trip with the long car travel involved and limited time and yet as it turned out, this part of the trip was the highlight.

Mix in some surfing, laid-back travel and chill-outs, local beach recommendations from the fabulous Sharon at The Hideaway, great food and the rest speaks for itself. The Hideaway is a good combination if you're a family - it still has the little extras you want and need with kids (fantastic staff who took our son under their wing) - but it also has a laid-back and traveller feel in keeping with the style of Arugam Bay. If you're looking for a deluxe mainstream 'hotel' with all the trimmings and room service, this isn't for you. If you're looking for something intimate yet relaxed, taking you back to those care-free days, yet completely independent in character, this has to be the best option around.

Our kids loved it. They were very welcome although initially with the particular 'vibe' at Hideaway, I wondered if it was the best option with a very active two year old and four year old. No problem.

The only recommendation I would make for families with kids, is to opt for one of the cabins (a/c or fan) which are further removed from the restaurant action and they also have doors open directly onto the outdoor area with hammocks and loads of space to play. We stayed in the house rooms directly at the top of the restaurant; this is great for couples and late-night sessions but not so for kids.

But that was a small lesson learnt. Now that we know the deal, we're back again next year for another stint there - we were already chatting to Sharon about our next visit and this time, for a bit longer (we stayed five nights). It's just that kind of place. It grows on you and you surely do NOT want to leave and could quite happily spend the days lulling about after a surf, tucking into the splendid brekkie, having a chat and preparing yourself for the onflow of very very fabulous cocktails, dinner and chilled out music that night after the kids have gone to bed.

What's not to like??

Thanks Sharon and team and apologies it took me this long to get this review done (we stayed in August). See you next year. PS Logan says 'Hello Raj!!'

Room Tip: Rooms upstairs have fans and there are a/c and non a/c options for cabins. There was a nice afternoo...
