My friend and I (both 27; teachers from London) just returned from a month long trip in Sri Lanka. Arugam Bay was the last place we went to.
In response to many of the views on here I felt compelled to write one for Gecko, because I feel that people have been terribly rude and quite unfair.
The quality of Gecko's food was by far the best we came across in Sri Lanka, and yes, although the prices are higher (more in keeping with low-British prices than Sri Lankan) my friend and I - who were on a strict budget - still felt it affordable and worth it to dine there everyday for 8 days.
Re the service. Yes at times it was slow, but this is Sri Lanka. Where else did people go? Service was slow in many places we visited, but who's in a rush, on holiday? It isn't London; things don't happen instantaneously and why should you want it that way? We felt perfectly content listening to the cool tunes, and playing the games that they supplied in their restaurant, while we waited for a food.
Re the rudeness. We encountered not even the slighthest rude attitude, which leads me to question how people behave in order to provoke such apparent attitudes in the staff. Like in all walks of life, be kind and polite to people, and they will respond in turn. That was our experience in Gecko.
We spoke at length with the British owner, Liz, and Rameesh, her husband, whose English was not as good, no less was nothing but kind to us. We were also impressed with the chilled ambiance and little touches like the bunting, cushions and light shades, and found it a very relaxing place to spend our time. Even though we hadn't stayed there, they also allowed us to store out bags there on our last day after we checked out of our place and there was no theft
I feel people have been very hard on this place. Don't avoid. Go: be patient, be kind, and you will enjoy in return.
