This is quite a property! Beautiful grounds and they do such a wonderful job of maintaining it all. The little details are very appreciated. The Sunrise Casita was lovely. HUGE. Pics online did not do it justice. We had a great mountain view and cute deck to sit on. The owner, David, is an excellent host and seems to make friends with each and every guest. He clearly loves what he does! The breakfasts were all different and delicious. The only negative is the 20 mile drive into Durango... but even still this is a great place to relax for a few days! Dont miss the Kennebec restaurant when you stay here.. just down the road in Hesperus and its excellent!!

“Loved this place! great fishing”

Blue Lake Ranch

Jun 8, 2008

My Husband and I had to go to Durango for work—we decided to stay at this B&B and it turned out to be our “second honey moon.” Friendly staff, beautiful landscaping, and wonderful breakfast! It beat staying at the regular old hotels we were used to staying at. We are an active couple and took advantage of fishing in the pond and local rivers (great fishing in the pond) we hiked around and enjoyed everything this inn had to offer! I don’t think I have ever met people so welcoming . I would highly recommend this hotel to any young couple looking for a great place to stay that isn’t too far from golf, fishing, hiking, anything that Colorado has to offer. What a place.

I was going to be in the Durango area for work, and searched for a getaway location for some serious rest and relaxation for myself and my boyfriend. I found Blue Lake Ranch on line. I can assure you that this B&B is a treasure, and the service, breakfast, accomodations, and mostly the beautiful countryside will make you never want to leave! We grilled steaks on the patio of our sunrise casita as the sun went down, and woke to the breathtaking views of La Plata range. We have travelled the world, and I can tell you this is one of the most beautiful places I have stayed. The bathroom was like a spa, the bed luxurious, and the privacy unbelievable....it is truly romantic....I can see why it would be a PERFECT spot for a honeymoon! WALK, dont drive, to breakfast in the morning....and in the evening, keep you windows open to enjoy the yipping sounds of coyotes in the distance. We went horseback riding nearby...it was SO wonderful. I hope we can return to Blue Lake Ranch again someday, worth every penny!

“Bedbugs and road noise”

We booked a week in June to join a large family group. Asked for the River House, which was purportedly on a small river a bit away from the main lodge, on its own acreage. Supposedly two bedrooms, as we were sharing the house with my sister. We found the second "bedroom" to be 2 twin beds on a tiny porch smaller than an inside cabin on a cheap cruise line.
Cut to the chase: River House is very close to a MAIN road with lots of trucks going by using their "Jake Brakes" (very noisy compression brakes). I timed one - I could hear it approaching, passing by and going away for a minute and 15 seconds. Add to this ANOTHER road on the other side, and peace and quiet is not what you are going to get. The little river doesn't stand a chance to muffle the noise.
On top of this my wife got over 40 bites during the night from some insect - enough to cause one eye to swell nearly shut.
We put up with this for one night, and asked for a room change. They were full, and had no alternative for us. We decided to leave the hotel. My sister, who is a bit hard of hearing and a sound sleeper, decided to stay. We got no help from the management regarding our deposit or a significant discount on the price for my sister to stay as a single - I had to make up the difference. A VERY expensive bad experience!
As there were no other 6-night accommodations in the Durango area, (which would have been a half hour away), we decided to leave the gathering and head to our next stop, southern Utah. There we were warmly welcomed in the little town of Torrey, at the Torrey Schoolhouse Inn (see review) for a stay that was the exact opposite experience.
Given our bad lodging experience and ultimate treatment by the management, we would NEVER stay at Blue Lake Ranch again nor recommend it to anyone. They do have some quite nice newer accommodations close to the main lodge - maybe they don't have any bedbugs?

We enjoyed our stay a lot. The casitas were very comfortable. They could use some new pillows but overall nice.
Nice breakfast buffet each morning.
The staff was lovely.
Bathroom large and user friendly.
Lovely grounds although the lake was not visible from too many spots.
If I go to this part of Colorado again, I would return to this resort.
