“DISAPPOINTED”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2013

We arrived late the first night and were completely shocked at what we saw. When we drove in we both looked at each other and asked, "What is this, a trailer park?" If you want to stay in your own private cabin with a majestic lake view, don't stay here. The lake is actually a scummy looking canal that runs between the 2 lakes and the cabins look to be a remodeled old motel, with all the units connected. We were awakened both nights by neighbors returning and the noise they made while in their room. We where at Grand Lake for a wedding and had several friends that stayed at other locations. They were all very pleased with their accommodations and when one of the couples came to drop something off for us, they decided to drive right on by and give it to us at the wedding. That is what kind of "curb appeal" this place has. Overall, the room was O.K. It was clean and the bed was very comfortable. We were not expecting a 4 Star, but for $160 per night, this is not a deal. Others that were at the wedding payed about the same and had very good experiences. My wife and I have stayed in several other Cabins on Minnesota lakes for half the price. Is a mountain view from a run down hotel room worth twice as much??? I have noticed in past bad reviews, the owners were disappointed that no one informed them of their concerns. We were there for 2 days and never did get to meet the owners, despite going to the office several times to settle up with them.

Room Tip: There are several other places to stay in Grand Lake. Look elsewhere.

We have two locations: Mountain Lakes Lodge is on the Granby-Shadow Mountain Canal and North Shore Resort on Lake Granby. We don't have free-standing cabins at either location and don't advertise that we do. There are pictures on our website that show the outside of the buildings and explanations several places that the units are connected. With vaulted ceilings and real log beams, it doesn't look at all like a hotel inside. We do have three RV sites and during the busiest part of the summer, they may all be full.

We do our best to clarify which units are at each property and are happy to answer questions. No, we don't have a "lake view" from the location on the canal. The canal is typically pumped on a daily basis, but was not pumped for about 2 weeks this summer. The pumping schedule is based on the needs of the Front Range and is not in our control.

As we state several places including the door to the office, we have a tremendous amount for two people to maintain. (Accommodations for over 100 and 3 1/2 acres of property.) We can only staff the office on an as-needed basis. We're all over both properties all the time and typically within 5 minutes of the office if you'll let us know you need something. (We're glad you liked your clean, comfortable room, as we work extremely hard to make it that way.)

Although we have been working on curb-appeal since we have been here, we agree that we need to continue to do so. With the extremely harsh conditions we experience at times in the mountains, it seems to be two steps forward and one back.

Minnesota has hundreds of lakes. Colorado doesn't, therefore you won't find comparable rates. Yes, there are several other places to stay in Grand Lake. This one may not be the one for you, but for many other guests it's just right.

Overall impression - the lodge itself was cool (i.e. very creatively decorated) and met our needs. Definitely had some issues like hot/cold water usage during showers and "incomplete doors.", Views out the back were nice, though not great. Good location and definitely good for the money. Also could easily sleep 6.

We stayed for half a week in Bait-n-Tackle. We were a bit disappointed when we pulled in, as the parking area was mostly just gravel and not very "mountainy" feeling nor groomed, with a couple of trailers in storage that were visible. The unit - one of 6 attached cabins in a row- was as it looked in the pictures online. Very, very clever decorating and painting seemed newly done, as you can see from some of the pictures. The "kitchen area" is more of a sink and metal counter, full refrigerator with small microwave on top, and cabinets along the right-hand wall as you enter the unit. Also had full sets of silverware and plates/dishes/cookware. The day bed functioned as the sofa and the eating area was very generous - could sit up to 8 people probably. The unit was clean, but one thing that was odd was the doors into the bathrooms and bedroom were more like outside shower beach house doors - didn't go to the floor nor top of the doorway. They worked for sight privacy, but not for, ahem, sounds, etc. Also, for married couples with kids, any "intimate sounds" would most likely be overheard :-( .

We used the trundle bed which worked great for the kids and the double queen bed was very comfortable, though the bedroom was pretty small. Having 2 bathrooms was essential and they were fine, though also small. It would be more useful if they had a sink and cabinet instead of the pedestal sinks. The shower was very small and water pressure very weak. We also had to prohibit water usage while someone took a shower due to the shower water getting burning hot or freezing cold, depending on what was turned on at the other faucet. The H20 heater also scared us witless the first evening as it made sounds like a bear was trying to break into the unit right after we got in bed.

The view out the back door was nice, though the canal isn't very attractive. There are horseshoes (which I love playing!) and kids can sit there and throw rocks into the canal from the river bank. There is a nice horse field across the canal, but unfortunately if you look too far to the left, you will see a car repair shop (I'm guessing - a lot of cars behind the building in full view) in the distance.

As for location - great! A few miles from Grand Lake, which is a very cool, tough touristy, town. Dairy King had the best soft serve ice cream ever (and I"m not a big soft serve fan). Really good sporting goods shop, Never Summer. The unit was also in quick striking distance to Rocky Mountain National Park, which was where we went each day, as well as other nearby hikes to waterfalls.

The owners were nice, though a bit overwhelmed with the work required to run such an establishment. They really needed to hire another hand.

Room Tip: Bait-n-Tackle if you like very good creative decorating.

Thank you so much for your feedback. Specific comments like these are very helpful in giving priority to the items on our 10-page list! The business can't yet support hiring as much help as we could use, but we're working on getting it there.

The canal wasn't pumped for a couple of weeks this summer and did get a bit green before they started moving it again. When it's moving, it's not only lovely to look at, but some darn good fishing, too! Our neighbor across the horse pasture isn't a mechanic- he just has a love of old cars. We heard it's a passion he inherited from his dad.

We loved that you shared some pictures of the fun decor. The former owners were the original "Upcyclers". We've tweaked some of the units and are working on some of our own fun ideas to add to the property!

This was our 4th stay at the Mountain Lakes Lodge. Our family loves that we can all get what we want from this location. Fishing just feet away, wildlife everywhere, beautiful views and a great place to call home while we were there. I consider myself a hotel snob and I just don't rough it too much. This location is perfect. The kids feel like they are camping, my husband can really get a way from it all and I have the comforts of a nice bed and shower every single day. We stayed in the Farm House and had up to 13 people during our week. We had plenty of room with everyone having a space to call their own. We took advantage of the large campfire at night and the canal during the day. We loved everything!

My boyfriend (who lives in another state) and myself decided to get away to the mountains for a romantic weekend getaway. He had never been to this part of Colorado, and I had only been up towards Granby once. I reserved a room at the Mountain Lakes Lodge for two nights. The lodge is a set of long connected "cabin-style" lodge rooms. Our room was towards the end of one of them, and outside of our back door was a little fenced yard, complete with a little deck and a grill. Our room itself definitely had a cabin feel, with a loft, a small kitchenette, hardwood floors, a clean and stocked bathroom, and a queen-sized bed. The room also has a table and chairs, complete sets of dishes and kitchenware, extra blankets, and a folder with details about where to fish, where to hike, where to rent equipment for fishing etc. Edie was very helpful, answering all of our questions about the area and where to fish. I ended up catching a decent-sized trout right outside of our backdoor (literally 40 feet away from our back door) in the canal that connects to the lake. My boyfriend caught one in Lake Granby, just a short trip down the road. Our stay at this place was complete with visits from some wildlife, including a small black bear and horses, which we were able to pet (the horses, not the bear!). We had a magical time, I am so happy I took a chance on this place. I read other reviews of this place and, although highly reviewed overall, there were some bad ones as well. All I have to say about that is this...If you are looking for the Ritz-Carlton, this place is not for you, but then again, you probably wouldn't want to go spend the weekend in the mountains to begin with. If you are looking for clean, cozy, quaint, romantic, rustic, complete with nice owners, gorgeous surroundings, wildlife, and outdoor activities right outside your door, this is your place!

Room Tip: This place seems very family-friendly as well...We saw a playground on the property and a couple of...

If you like crude rustic lodging this is the place for you. The property needs some measures taken in upkeep and maintenance. You must take out your own trash or pay an additional $25. For $125. a night $25. for trash removal is excessive! It was very difficult to get the water temp correct; seemed either hot or cold. WiFi did not work; very limited cell phone reception. The bed was very comfortable. This should have been a $49.95 a night room rather than $125.

Dear "Disappointed",

It's very disheartening to have guests book our rustic housekeeping cabins, and then give us a poor review when that's exactly what they get! We are very clear and up front about our properties being both "rustic" and "Housekeeping Cabins" (You need to do your dishes and take your trash to the dumpster just a few steps away.) We have no desire to charge people for trash removal. We simply want them to abide by our request, so there aren't lingering odors for the next guest. (Think cantaloupe, baby diapers or fish....) With only 2-3 staff to maintain accommodations for 133, we cannot always get into each unit immediately.

Considering that we offer unique and adorable units with kitchenettes that include basic cook ware and dining ware, cleaning supplies (even rags and paper towels) and all linens for your bed, bath and kitchen, plus lots of free extras like books, magazines, board games and dvds, our pricing is very competitive. You will find nothing in the area for the price you suggested.

We have and will continue to work extraordinarily hard to make improvements to the property. We aren't going for "manicured", though, since most people come to the area to connect with the natural surroundings.

We have spent nearly $3000 in the past 2 1/2 years to optimize our WiFi for our guests. If you let us know that it isn't working correctly, we can reset the modem and antenna in less than 5 minutes. Guests do need to let us know.

Of course, we have no control over reception for the cell phone service provider you selected.

Happy Travels,

Edie and Doug Dafoe, Managers

This is the only place to stay if you bring your dogs with you! I've stayed here probably 20 times over the last several years. Really quaint cabins with fenced in (small) backyards, and the canal is 50 feet away to fish in. Doug and Edie are awesome manager/owners.

Thank you very much for being a loyal customer and for letting others know about "one of Grand Lake's best kept secrets for pet owners"! We warmly welcome pets, while maintaining a Pet Policy that makes guests without pets feel equally welcome. We understand the importance to pet owners, of spending quality time with their "furry best friend" and everyone's desire to stay in a lodging property that is "hotel clean".

I have stayed in many rustic cabins in the mountains and I typically feel the need to wear my flip flops because most rustic places are not clean. We were very pleased with the cleanliness of the property. We had a nice view of the canal with mountains and horses in the background. We were in Grand Lake at one of the busiest times of the year and it was very quiet. Edie was very accomodating and we wanted for nothing while we were there. I would reccomend this property to anyone traveling with their dog and wanting a clean place away from crowds yet close to town.
