“Fantastic Vacation on a Budget”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2013

My sister and I stayed here last January (2013) as a last minute stop to ski in Winter Park on our way home. We knew going into it the hostel-like situation that we were getting into, having both traveled through Europe staying in similar places. We were very happy and pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed our stay here. The staff were all extremely helpful, and the other guests staying at that time were a lot of fun to socialize with in the living and dining rooms. One guest even had discounted lift tickets for us; you just never know who can help you out! It was also great having the kitchen since we tried to make most of our meals to cut back on cost. We stayed in one of the dorm-styled rooms two nights and only had to share with other people one of the nights, the second night we had the room to ourselves. Definitely will stay here again next time we are visiting Winter Park!

We have stayed at The Rocky Mountain Chalet I believe 3 years in a row and my family of 5 always stay in the Rose Suite and LOVE IT!!!! We appreciate how clean everything is and like the "no shoes" policy. Staff has always been very friendly and helpful. We will definately make this our stay when in Colorado.

I would stay there again, It was very clean. The innkeeper was awesome and very personable and helpful to find activities and events during our stay. There was a train close by that blew its whistle in the morning but I am an early riser so it did not bother me, The walls are thin if you have noisy neighbors emailed here them

Our family stayed at the Rocky Mountain Chalet for one night over Spring Break. We had two adults and three kids in our group and we stayed in the Rose Suite. The room was very clean and comfortable with two large beds and it felt more like a bedroom in a house than a normal hotel room. This hotel has a bead and breakfast feel to it. There is a hostel upstairs which is a little unusual but we saw very few other people during our stay and we did not have any issues with the hostel. The common area is small but comfortable and the complimentary continental breakfast was very good with a nice selection of healthy choices. The staff was pleasant and friendly. The hotel asks that you remove your shoes at the front door which some people may seem a bit odd. But with a very muddy parking lot and wet snow on the ground it is understandable to help keep the floors and carpets clean. There is a very good Mexican food restaurant just steps away. The hotel is located a couple of minutes away from two tubing hills which we found very convenient. Our family would stay at the Rocky Mountain Chalet again.

Well, I don't know from where to start... I guess it is my mistake to expect for almost 200 dollars for 16 hours (check in 6pm-10am) have dissent hotel room in this area. First, when you walk in you will stumble to bunch of shoes different sizes and shapes in narrow hallway and laminated sign, where administration kindly asking you to take off your shoes before you can approach to the concierge. When you balancing to take out your boots and kipping you lagged of the carpet , and you finally reach to the “front desk “ and all your info checked and you get the keys and list with the front door keys combination , because its closed at 9:30PM. Next we proceed to the room… surprise… inside we found king bed and more 3 full sized beds like in military barracks with an additional laminated signs one on the entrance door and one on the table with set of rules what to do and not to do in this room… When I asked where I can get a hot water, I was directed to the second floor where I found big kitchen with 2 refrigerators, 2 gas-stoves ,2 dishwashers and ….. many… many … laminated signs with others rules how to behave yourself in this area… and more…. Long-long table with bunch of strangers sitting and staring at you… It was the creepiest experience and this night supposed to be a romantic getaway for my husband birthday … I do not know how to describe what I was feeling in that place… it is defiantly not a hotel an especially European… It is more flophouse for travelers on the budget with families of 20…  Would I recommend this place…. NO! NO! NO! NO! I was disappointed when I opened the front door of this “hotel”, and crying when I walked in the room…. If they tried to create a family type of atmosphere…like at your grandmother house… they didn’t succeed… Creepy overpriced flophouse…

We are a unique accommodation that is both a hotel and a hostel. Our website displays the attributes of both of our lodging options so potential guests can make the choice that is best for them. Our private rooms each offer a different configuration of beds which is clearly described on our website. Most guests find this variety of choices very helpful to meet their individual needs. This guest chose a room that is very popular for large families whom are very happy to find a room where all the family members have an individual bed. Unfortunately, the choice she made with her reservation was not the best one for her needs. Our Fern or Meadow rooms would have provided the luxurious "romantic getaway" with their beautiful 4 poster king beds and private patios. A well rounded traveler would have found our hostel on the second floor to be warm and well appointed. We do have a large, double kitchen that is wonderful for all of our guests to utilize as an alternative to going out to a restaurant. The large dining table is often the place where the guests gather and enjoy exchanging stories and information about other ski or cycling resorts. They also often share their culinary efforts with one another as well. This guest missed an opportunity to take advantage of this warm and friendly community. We are a small facility that does require some "rules" in order to make the stay a comfortable one for both hotel and hostel guests. Many of our rules are focused on minimizing late night noise that can carry easily within our small building and disturb fellow guests. We are situated on a large, gravel parking lot that allows a lot of snow, mud and gravel to be carried in on the boots and shoes of our guests. We do ask all guests to remove their footwear at the door to minimize damage to our tiled lobby and carpeted rooms. We have boot trays in each room for shoe and boot storage but most opt to leave their footwear on our shoe rack by the door. When our facility is full, that can add up to many pairs that sometimes overwhelms the rack. It is unfortunate that this guest arrived during one of our busy times when the other guests' shoes and boots had overflowed the storage area. Our staff tries to keep them orderly but often the high traffic times makes that difficult. Most guests like this request because it keeps their rooms clean and dry. They often say it "feels like home". We strive for that homey feel and are told we have achieved that on a daily basis. We are sorry this guest did not have the experience she was expecting and hope that she returns again to give us the opportunity to place her in the right room at the right time so she can see why 5280 named us a one of their "Best Winter Getaways".

I ski at Winter Park almost weekly. This is my favorite place to stay. I enjoy cooking in the big kitchen, conversing with people from different places, and having a good night's sleep. If you are bothered by a "group atmosphere," this is not what you want. If you like having conversations with fellow travelers, you will like.

We needed to house a high school ski racing team for a Thanksgiving Race Camp and The Rocky Mountain Chalet ended up being the perfect place for our group of 30 or so guests. Making the arrangements with the owner (Dianne) was very simple. The staff (Jamie, Austin and Nick) were extremely helpful, courteous and friendly. They helped us with everything throughout our stay. The Chalet itself is on par with any 5 star resort. We were on a tight budget and the cost was half of what our other options in the area would cost. They have an incredible kitchen where we had a Thanksgiving Dinner for 30 with no problem. If I were surveyed and asked what they could improve upon there is nothing I could come up with. We are planning on using the Rocky Mountain Chalet every year for our Thanksgiving Race Camp.
