I was in Fort Garland for just one night and wanted a nice meal. This restaurant is right across the street from my motel, so it was an obvious choice. But even better, personal friends had highly recommended it. They advertise: Lunch, Dinner, Dine In, Take Out. Plus: American, Italian, Mexican, Desserts, Fudge. It may not appear to be much from the outside, but don't be fooled - they do a good business, and it's larger than it appears. There are countless tables and another eating area with more windows near the front. Frank Sinatra was playing when I arrived - which seemed a little curious and made me chuckle, but hey, Frank is always good, right? Their location is excellent, west of the intersection of Rt. 160 (to Alamosa and the Great Sand Dunes) and a road south to Taos/Santa Fe. Ordering was tough as there were many good choices; I got their Sourcream Chicken Enchilada ($9.49) - it was extremely moist and filling, with lots of chicken - and I finished it all! (Since my motel didn't have a fridge, it was either that or leave it - and I wasn't about to leave it.) The restaurant is actually called Al-Gon Restaurant and Pizzeria - so much of their business is pizza. While I ate, several came to pick up take-out - in the restaurant, two women were enjoying Mexican entrees and at another table, an older gentleman and two young men were devouring a very large, yummy-smelling pizza. Before my food arrived, I looked around the restaurant - fresh flowers on the tables; a salad bar (tho I didn't try it out); and a display near me which said, "Fudge Shots." I asked the waiter what they were? Homemade for just $1.50 - a very interesting little fudge dessert in many varieties. Yum! I told myself I'd grab one as I left. Well, after stuffing myself, I couldn't eat another bite - now I wish I'd taken one of those beauties along! (According to their website, their fudge is a BIG deal!) The service was very attentive and friendly. As my food was being prepared, the waiter said my order would be out soon. As I ate, he checked on me again. Music by then was Beyond the Sea, which made me chuckle again. Music is big here - they have a small entertainment area on the East end of the Restaurant - signs advertised Guitar Player Friday; Music Saturday; Dinner and a Play $25 - coming in June. FYI, their website advertises an All You Can Eat Buffet on Wednesdays. This Restaurant is much more than you think it will be and does a very good job - it's quite a little oasis in the middle of this small little town - well worth your time if you're traveling through the San Luis Valley.
