Having read the reviews, I was very skeptical of going to this ranch. But having owned a ranch myself, and having 30+ years riding experience, I didn't want nose-to-tail. And according to all the reviews anyway, the only bad experiences were from people cancelling, showing up late, or just phone inquiries. Seemed once you got on the trail, all was fine.
So I called for a reservation for my family (3 of us). The manner of the guy on the phone did seem a bit brusk. I'm not sure if it came across that way because of the accent or if he really was generally like that. Like other reviewers on here, the first ride of the morning was pushed. As we were flexible, we agreed to that time frame for a two hour ride.
We were late, I must admit (it can be tough to find, I suggest you check it out on a map before going there). The guy with the accent did seem a little upset by it, but fortunately the ride had not gone without us and we were still able to go on our ride.
The horse that was chosen for me was not what I would have expected. I have ridden at other places in the past and am used to one extreme or the other, high strung or plow horse. I rarely find a place that has horses that do what you want, whether it is at a quicker pace or a slower one. Frisco was all that and more, trotting when asked, slowing/stopping when asked, turning away from the group when asked. We were allowed, and even encouraged to customize the ride to our needs and wants. We got to explore the treed areas and kick up our heels on the flats. Our wrangler was amazing, telling us about the area, the ranch, and other great places to check out. He seemed to know when to fade into the background and let us do our thing, and when to chat us up.
When we got back, another ride was waiting. I did not realize that our being late had held up the day for others, and felt bad. I guess with the colder parts of the year, staff is limited. So I understood then why the guy was grouchy. Once we got back to the office, he chatted us up and offered food in the restaurant, even though it wasn't part of our ride. He gave us a lot of history on the ranch and the area. Turns out he's a long time resident of the area, though you wouldn't know it. He also has a sense of humor I did not expect, which was hard to pick up on at first with the accent.
All in all, it was a great day with my family. We will be returning again soon.
