La Trappe makes for a great lunch/afternoon a short bike ride into the country from downtown Tilburg. You can only go through a relatively small portion of the monastery even if you go on the tour, but what you go through is quite pretty and the location outside of the city and surrounded by farms is charming. First, the tour of the brewery. This is a good time, although the English tour is fairly minimal (you get a summary in English after the Dutch version of the tour). That said, the guide is a nice and funny, and you get to wander around the brewery a bit, so it is probably worth the time.
Now on to the beer and food. I really like the building that the restaurant is in, they built a new tasting room recently, and the style is modern, but with a thatched roof. It works well and makes for a cozy but open venue, in the winter with the fire burning I really enjoy lunch here. In the summer there is lots of outdoor seating in the gardens. You can get La Trappe beers in the tasting room that are generally not available in the stores (the double and triple ales are the most widely available). On top of this the food is quite good, surprisingly good for a Dutch restaurant. The story is that most of the food is organic and local, including the cows. Even the burgers are worth ordering. All-in-all, this is one of the places I take out of town visitors, a recommended spot in Tilburg, maybe even worth stopping in Tilburg for.
