Bella Mia sits in a cluster of restaurants on the Denver side of highway 82 in El Jebel, acoss from the City Market. It's a vibrant place - the owner's big spirit is much in evidence on the nights she's on the floor - and my partner and I are among a sizable collection of regulars who greet each other effusively at Bella Mia. It's not a circus by any means, just a happy place to enjoy an Italian meal - in an Italian way.
I love the shrimp - they manage to kep it crisp without being over-fried - and the pasta. I can't have either as frequently as I'd like these days, so I happily choose their Caesar salad with salmon. That's a combination I've seen messed up - even in Aspen - but not at Bella Mia. The salmon is still warm and adds a rich narrative to the greens.
They have a couple of televisions over the bar at Bela Mia - typically tuned to sports - but the sound is never up so it's not a distraction. Their outside dining - in the front - picks up highway noise from 82, but it's secluded enough to score points if you're being romantic or using the meal to apologize for some stupid male thing (I know that's redundant!).
We frequent Bella Mia because it is comfortable, friendly, tasty and a very good value.
