“Great location for ski in/out!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2010

We recently returned from our stay in Durango, CO at the Purgatory Village Condo Hotel. After reading the reviews, I decided to go ahead and book a one bedroom for our family of four. Make for sure you ask for an "A" rated room when booking. These condos are individually owned, so each one will be different. They are rated according to how new/nice they are. They are not luxury, but the room we had was very clean and well appointed. We had every thing we needed. If you are looking for something newer, try the Purgatory Lodge. However, you have to walk a bit further to the lifts. The staff was very helpful and efficient. I would recommend this place for anyone looking for a great ski in/out location. We walked right out the door and put on our skis! There are a couple of places to dine right down stairs. Ski lockers are also available in the hotel. The ski rental shop is located downstairs too! A free shuttle picks you up at the hotel to take you to the tubing hill. Airport transfer was very easy and took us to a grocery store on the way. They even made an extra stop at a pharmacy so we could pick up a prescription! We will go back next year!

We were very disappointed.. We drove out of our way to go to this hotel. I was assured by hotel staff that the activities would be available for the kids. We were told that the chair lift, digglers, and alpine slides would be open on June 19th. When asked if this was a FOR SURE DATE, I was told yes. It was posted on the interenet, etc. We planned our trip around this date because the kids were looking forward to these specific activities. When we arrived we were told nothing would open until the 20th. (The day we were driving home.) I will never go back!

If you're a skier, this is probably an awesome destination. For a summer traveler in need of a night's R&R, I'd suggest looking elsewhere. For $120 I got the bedroom-half of a small condo unit that was barely big enough for two. The un-carpeted room's furnishings were very minimal (one bed, one chair, no table and a small dresser with a TV and cablemodem/WiFi Router).

On the plus side, the staff were very friendly and helpful and the property was well maintained (though undergoing significant heavy construction for this year's ski season) with excellent views.

On the down side, however, the room was far too small for the rate charged. There is no air conditioning -- which if you're there to ski is just fine, but useless if you're staying in the summer and like a crisp cool sleeping environment, which my wife and I both do.

There are no blackout shades on the windows, just paper-thin translucent blinds on our east-facing room that made sleeping in past sunrise impossible. And speaking of paper-thin, the walls of our unit were definitely not soundproof! Noises emanating from the adjoining suite at all hours of the night were quite disturbing.

This may be a great ski destination, but as a place to stay in the summer, next time I'll go with a conventional hotel in town.

  • Liked — Nice scenery
  • Disliked — Small room, no blackout shades on windows, no A/C, paper-thin walls

My fiance's cousin was getting married in facilities owned by the Purgatory Ski Resort and everyone who attended the ceremony reserved rooms on site (75+ ppl). We originally booked a four bedroom (plus Jacuzzi on porch) house at the resort but for some reason, still unknown, we were moved to the new village being created across the street from the ski property. While the house was top-of-the-line and beautiful, only a handful of completed houses were located in the area and the rest of the village was a construction zone. I think the resort needs to take a month or two off and complete their renovations because the place is a MESS! Also, how can a large resort, such as Purgatory, not accomodate 75 people while neither open for winter or summer activities?

  • Liked — Upscale house
  • Disliked — Outside the house was a complete construction zone!!!

Just got back from a quick 4 ski day trip to Purgatory. Went with my two sons and took the charter flight from Dallas Love field. They were very well organized and checked us in to our rooms on the bus from the airport to the mountain. We had a 1 bedroom, it was very nice, full kitchen, nice furnishings....very comfortable. We brought food with us for breakfasts and lunches in the room. They have a small market but selection is very limited and prices are high. The only problem staying on the mountain is that everything pretty much closes by 5:00. They have a bar, Purgy's, that stays open till 8PM, but mostly fried food. The Creekside restaurant is open only till 6PM so we hustled after a day of skiing and got down there by 5:30. The food was surprisingly very good.

On the last day you are there, you have to check out early and they take your bags over to the community center. You can ski all day and you have access to your bags anytime you want. We skied a full day and then went to the community center where they gave us towels and we could take showers...then it was on the bus back to the airport. If it is all about skiing, this is the place to stay. Great experience and we will definitely go back.

Purgatory Village was simply awesome. I have snowboarded and skied in Europe, the US Northeast and all over Colorado and never have we felt as welcomed and taken care of as we did at Purgatory.
We are a family of 4 and this was the first time skiing for our kids, and my wife. The ski school staff for the kids were SUPERB! Matt Nimetz and his staff went beyond the call of duty in handling a meltdown by our son on the second day, and he ended up loving it. My daughter, who is a very shy person, was skiing at the end of day two and was so proud of herself. My wife also learned to ski in just a day and a half and loved the instructors on both days.....but especially Marge on day 2.
We stayed in the Blackbear Townhomes, and it felt like we were living in a Sundance catalog. The house, amenities, furnishings, fireplaces and the whole experience were top notch.
I recommend Purgatory and Durango Mountain Resort to anyone with a family. They really know how to make the whole experience a pleasure.

I had read alot of bad reivews on this hotel before we went, so I was a little nervous about staying there. However, we had an incredible time. We booked the room with the king size bed, hoping that it would be more comfortable than the reviews I read. However it was a standard hotel bed, and not particurally comfortable. The drains in the sink and jet bathtub were slow, but not horrible. The view was amazing, not to mention we were some of the only people in the hotel and had the rooftop jacuzzi all to ourselves to admire the stars. The sauna was nice, but electric, and had to warm up for about an hour. There was construction, but it did not bother us in any way. We could not even see it from our hotel room.

The staff was extremely nice and helpful in every way. One man stayed on the phone with me for 20 minutes before we arrived, telling me everything from where to shop and eat, to where provided the best horseback riding. When we arrived the woman at the desk wished us a happy anniversary, and even found us a corkscrew for the wine we had bought. I'm not sure how much they charge for the peak season since they are located RIGHT off of the slope lift, but it was an extremely good value for the offseason. It is a very nice hotel, but if you expect a superb hotel then you're probably better off staying at somewhere further down the mountain and driving up to the ski area.

  • Liked — The views and privacy of the hotel
  • Disliked — How far it was from Durango, about 30 minutes.
