We have stayed at Tammaron each summer for the past several years. Each time we have had a great experience. It is higher than town and has cooler temperatures. Nice and quiet location with no town traffic or noise. Great scenery and amenities. The kids love the pool with indoor/outdoor swim through wall. Wife and I love sitting on the deck and being able to watch the kids and enjoy the mountains at the same time.
The rooms are large and comfortable. There are 2 king size beds and a queen sized sleeper sofa in most rooms. They feature a small kitchenette (stove, fridge, dinnerware and sink). They are 1 ½ to 2 times larger than typical hotel rooms. We get two adjoining rooms and have tons of space for 2 adults and 4 kids. Pleasant mountain views from all the rooms. Parking is close with some covered spots. Ski lockers are available. None of the rooms face the highway and the hotel is situated far from the road.
Dining is somewhat limited to 2 onsite places. One expensive, but good and one inexpensive, but limited. However, there are many great spots in town. And the best kept secret in Durango is very close by, The Olde Schoolhouse in a few minutes up 550 in Needles (across from the Needles Country Store). By far, they make the best pizza in the State. Great bar, lots of friendly folks and staff, tons of humor and history. Closes at 9:42 (pert of the humor) but the bar stays open longer. My kids would go here every night if we let them.
The only down side is that you need a car to access Durango. Not that big of a deal, shoot to town, stay all day and zip back for rest. You can do the train all day, or a long raft trip. Or just hang out a play a few rounds of golf at the resort. In other words, you don’t really find yourself needing to make more than one trip to town in a day. There is a shuttle to the ski area and it runs more frequently in the winter.
In addition, the resort also books/manages many of the homes/cabins in the area if you would prefer those type pf accommodations.
We will be back.
