“Great Historic Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2014

Beautiful old hotel convenient to downtown activities and restaurants. Rooms were smaller but nice and we enjoyed reading about the hotel in a book that listed 100 historic hotels in America. The staff was great and very friendly and helpful. You do get a special wake up call when the train leaves. Get the breakfast with the room it is well worth it.

The Strater Hotel is a landmark building towards one end of the main street.
The lobby area and staircase up to the rooms are beautiful (there is also a small elevator).

The room was fairly large with a good sized en suite bathroom.
the free Wifi worked well 9 no password needed, always a bonus!)

There are two bars, one an old-fashioned saloon with waitresses in period costume, the other a quieter cocktail bar.

Maybe I missed the briefing, but only the cold buffet breakfast is free. If you order cooked items, its an extra $5, but my omelette was worth it.

If I was ever lucky enough to be back in Durango, I would stay here again.

We stayed here two nights as part of a vacation primarily to ride the train. This place is absolutely amazing and the decor is awesome. We were allowed to check in a couple hours early and parking was right across the street. The depot is within easy walking distance 2 blocks away and there are plenty of restaurants of every variety and shopping aplenty also within walking distance. It was very quiet even with the train nearby. The view out of the window was of a rooftop but that was luck of the draw. The breakfast buffet was good with scrambled eggs w/wo green chile, sausage, pastrys, fresh fruit - which was "stale" one day, hashbrowns, posole, juice coffee, etc. All in all this is one of the best hotels we've ever stayed in.

The welcome center gave us a heads up about a rag-time piano player at the Diamond Belle. We found the whole experience just great. Good food, service and ambiance. The hotel is a real icon from the past and everything is authentic and historic. Worth a visit even if you don't stay for a meal or the night.

The Strater Hotel was a wonderful accommodation for our recent trip out west. We got a deal with breakfast included. It was well worth it. While it was primarily a typical breakfast buffet with omelets to order...there was always one special sweet treat baked in the hotel that was awesome.

The rooms were nice and clean. Small bathrooms, but after all, it is an historic hotel. Our only mistake was booking multiple nights...not because of the hotel, but because the town of Durango has changed so much since we were there many years ago. The charm of western shops and interesting curios has given way to t-shirt and flip flop shops. I am sure it appeals to a younger demographic...but for us...looking for a unique western town experience, it was bust. A few good restaurants...and you can take a train to Silverton (which we have done before) that takes most of a day...but after that...sadly...it is a college town...not unlike the beach boardwalks of the Eastern shore.

We have stayed at this hotel several times and each time we have returned we are reminded of why we choose The Strater.
The accommodations are fitted with period Victorian furniture very tastefully decorated to take you back to an opulent time. The hotel staff are very accommodating and the food at the two restaurants are good.We were treated to a wonderful evening downstairs at the Belle Saloon with 4 really great musicians playing songs that fit the environment. The very cute waitresses dressed in period saloon wear we're very attentive and friendly. Having dinner and being entertained all came at a reasonable price well worth the money so do make your evening plans here and look no farther.
The breakfast staff were a little off but the posole made up for the slight of the staff.
If you go request room 322 for a great view , oh yes it is on the road and you will hear the trucks early in the morning so if you want quiet then request this when checking in.
The long time owners have dedicated a lot of attention to preserving the history so that they can share a place in time. My hat is off for such a dedication and allowing people to be taken back to a time. The Strater is an institution and should not be missed if you are in Durango

Room Tip: Room 322 was spacious and had a great bay window which gives you plenty of natural light.

This is hotel that has been lovingly preserved and kept up throughout the years. No, you will not get giant bathrooms or bedrooms. But if you appreciate beautiful antiques and lovely architechture, then this is a nice stop. We reserved a king bed...it was nice, room a bit cramped but not bad. The bath was tiny but we weren't taking ballroom dancing lessons in there. Great breakfasts. I liked it and would stay here again. If you want more space, stay in a king bedroom.
