“A Real Taste of the Old West”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2014

This is a historic hotel that does not rely on its status as the oldest hotel in the area in order to attract guests. The service during our July stay was world class. The rooms are comfortable (ask for one on the 3rd or 4th floor if you want a little space from the bars and restaurants below). The location on Main Street is prime. My husband and I strongly recommend staying here to anyone who will be passing through the area.

My new wife and I stayed here during 18 day great Western Road Trip and LOVED IT. Hotel is historic, perfectly located, with comfy rooms and friendly staff. Durango is a great little town, so we're happy we spent 2 nights not 1. This hotel is a GEM.

We chose this hotel after our experience last year when stepped off the train and found several stops for the Rapid Transit blocked off.

The Strater hotel is within easy walking distance of the Durango/Silverton train. We booked via phone and got a corner room on the fourth floor which provided an excellent view of the train. We had an excellent breakfast for a special rate of $5 more a person.

We were told the ice machine was touchy on third floor, but we had no problems with the ice machine on the second floor. They had no in-room coffee, but they had a coffee set-up down the hall by the elevator.

It's funny, because they call it a historic hotel but it has electronic keys. Not just plastic cards, these look more like real keys, but they have a chip on the end that's programmed with each guest.

Beautiful quaint room. But with two drawbacks. No grab bars in the bathroom and uncomfortable bed But they had a shallow tub, and we could climb into the tub hanging onto the sink. They recycle their soap and send it to the needy. Also, such a clever idea, because they had a special black washcloth for make-up. The other more worrisome problem was the mattress shifted sideways every time we sat on it. My husband kept thinking he'd fall out of the bed, because about six inches hang over the edge. Neither of us got a good night sleep either night.

Room Tip: Lovely view, but heard the trains coming through!

This was a great stop on our family road trip. Great town - great hotel - good food - terrific atmosphere. We had a huge family room which was beautiful. The saloon had live entertainment and great food which was good value. The staff were all fantastic - especially the gals in the saloon. The breakfast is good. Parking is provided nearby. This is a highly recommended stop.

Room Tip: We had a good room on the first floor which had a vestibule which made it very quiet

Our stay at the Strater Hotel was wonderful, and we had none of the problems experienced by other reviewers. The room was very clean and beautifully decorated and restored to its lovely Victoria authenticity with fine furniture and accessories. The wallpaper is truly unique with ornate patterns; the design on the ceiling displayed wonderful craftsmanship. The property is on Main Street, and one can experience street noise but our room was toward the middle of the hotel, so we were not disturbed. The hotel is a historical landmark, and you will hear people walking, but I thought that this it to be expected in a building that has seen travelers for many years. The hotel offered a superior full buffet breakfast at a nominal price with varied and tasty selections including the regional dish posole, scrambled eggs, sausage, hash browns, cereal, pastries, fresh fruit and yogurt. You could have a fresh cooked omelet if desired. Also, the restaurant was beautiful with spectacular Tiffany lamps and fine mahogany furnishings. There was no problem with the service. We did not have a coffee maker in our room, but coffee and tea were offered in the hall from about 6:00 to 9:30 am, and tea is available in the lobby all day. The staff was friendly, and the elevator worked at all times. I would definitely stay again and recommend the Strater to others.

Room Tip: Ask for a room toward the back if you do not want street noise.

We planned a trip to Durango on rather short notice, and rooms at the Strater were about the only lodging available. We stayed two nights in one premium room, went to Mesa Verde, came back and stayed three nights in a different premium room. The first (226) was a decent size but with an awkward bathroom and lots of noise from the Harley crowd on Main. The second (323, the Gustaf Nordenskiold room – cool story) was quieter and significantly roomier, with a large dining table(!), interesting antique sofa, huge windows, quality sun-filtering window treatments, and a roomy bathroom with splendid tile- and woodwork. I don’t normally care for Victorian décor but the attention to authentic detail at this property (wallpapers, lamps, walnut furniture and trim) will remain my favorite memory of it.

The beds and bedding were quite comfy. Showers worked like a dream. We were happy that our rooms had coffeemakers (I like coffee as soon as I wake up, my husband likes decaf at night) but there was not one day during our two stays that housekeeping re-stocked the coffee supplies, threw out the used filters, or supplied clean coffee cups (which were paper, by the way). We kept having to ask the desk for coffee, decaf or cups, and one especially unhelpful clerk responded with “Well, we put plenty of that stuff out in the hall in the mornings” – not considering the possibility that if we were paying for an in-room coffeemaker that we might actually want to USE it. We found the breakfast buffet selection disappointing and the service deplorable (one morning we waited 12 min for staff to replenish the scrambled eggs and bring cereal bowls; on another I watched our waitress carry the toast I ordered to four other tables asking, “Toast? Did you order toast?” only to arrive at ours with, you guessed it, tepid toast). The hotel elevator was out of service from Thursday night to Monday afternoon, which was rough on guests staying on the 3rd and 4th floors (the stairs are steep). Yes, the staff would carry stuff if you asked but you had to ask; and in fact, they were so blasé on the matter that I wondered if elevator outages were a regular occurrence. As others here have noted, parking is available in three separate nearby lots, and the map to those lots is poor.

All that said, we enjoyed the hotel’s location in the historic district, walking distance to some great restaurants, shops, architectural walking tours, and the Durango-Silverton train station. Would love to see this magnificent property with improved guest services but till then, it’s not a good value.

Room Tip: Our third-floor room was much quieter than our second-floor room -- further from the hub-bub of Main...

We stay here in the middle part of June. We arrived late at night, around 9:00 P.M. We checked in, took our bags up to our room, and then went outside to do a little late sight-seeing.

As we were walking around, we saw a large flash, and then most of the town lights went out - power failure. We went back to the hotel, and inquired about the situation at the front desk (the front desk had lights due to back-up power). The college age clerks seemed at a loss as to what was happening, and how to proceed. We sat on the entrance hall couch, which was in the dark. We watched as other hotel workers and servers from the attached restaurant showed up, asking about flashlights and what to do. They all seemed at a loss as to what to do, and whether there were any flashlights.

We sat on the couch for an hour, with no one giving us any information, or whether they could help us in any way. The only worker who later interacted with us was a waitress who, smirk on her face, jiggled a flashlight into our eyes, and then, satisfied with her own amusement, walked on her way without a word to us. Finally, my wife and I decided to go up to the room using her small purse flashlight (it was a bit interesting using the bathroom in the middle of the night with only an AAA cell flashlight to provide light). They were apparently no trained people on duty, just a bunch of clueless college kids. (I shudder to think what might happen during a real emergency, such as a fire or medical situation).

The included breakfast was pretty sad. One waitress trying to provide coffee, toast, juice, and other sundries to the two dozen customers in the breakfast café. Service was SLOW. When she finally did bring out toast, it was burned. When I sent it back, she said that "they were having technical difficulties" with the toaster ! (Ah, that high-tech equipment !).

The room was OK, nothing much, a bit small, but to be expected for a hundred-year-old building. Of course, no fitness center or pool.

Would we stay here again? No, but not because of the power outage. The hotel was mediocre, and not worth the price they charged because of the prime location.
