“Very nice old hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 weeks ago

The Strater Hotel is a nice place to stay for a night but would not want to go back again. Pros: Beautiful old hotel authentically & elegantly decorated. Rooms are clean & staff were pleasant. Cons: Very noisy through the night with garbage truck banging outside our window at 4.00am & various other noise all night. Parking is a hassle with a block walk to the hotel carrying luggage. Restaurant food was just ok & could have been better. Room smelt musty but I guess it is old so it's to be expected. I would not stay there again but that's just my personal choice, it is a lovely old hotel with lots of charm for people who like the old atmosphere. I found the cost a bit steep for the experiance

Room Tip: Try a room at the front ours was at the back & very noisy

We spent a couple of nights in a large family room which our friend described as the nicest hotel room he had ever stayed in. Lovely furniture and decoration. There were 4 adults and the room was large enough that we weren't falling over each other. We had a delicious breakfast (as staying guests we were offered omelets in addition to the variety of food already offered). Their hotel's fruit scones and strawberry/banana bread and posole were included - wonderful! The delightful hostess, Hannah, gave us the recipes for these items which we plan to try out. All the public rooms are beautifully decorated; the bar has servers dressed in period costume and was packed for the amusing (yes!) gunfight the evening we arrived. The rates are slightly higher than chain hotels in Durango but the Strater is conveniently located on Main Street, a lovely building and with the huge breakfast, a real bargain.

This beautiful hotel is right in the heart of downtown Durango. It is very convenient for walking to shops and restaurants. However we were at the back of the hotel. While it was fun to see the train from our window it was not fun to be awakened from our sleep early in the morning by the train whistle. Also the bathroom was very tiny. Very tiny. I like that the rooms are not furnished like an ikea showroom. The antiques were a nice touch. But the bedding was average. I expected more based on what it costs per night to stay there. Still it was fun to be at a historic hotel and I would probably stay there again. It is very close to the excellent French bakery.

Room Tip: Ask for a room near the front of the hotel

We found the Strater to be one of the most beautiful, authentic and historic hotels we have ever had the pleasure to visit. We stayed in King Room 401, which had windows facing out on two sides with beautiful mountain views. Allegedly, a ghost cat has been known to visit the room and maybe that's what we heard rattling the hall door and the connecting door around midnight when no-one was there, the only disturbance to our wonderfully peaceful night. A member of the very helpful and friendly staff informed us that in the 1880s, the top floor had served as a bordello with curtains instead of doors on the rooms. Maybe one of the former occupants was trying to enter. We had a very enjoyable dinner and breakfast in the lovely dining room. Our only regret was that, because we were in Town to celebrate a friend's bat mitzvah headquartered at a lodge outside of town, we could only stay one night. We hope to come back. Incidentally, the hotel allowed us to continue parking, without charge, after we checked out so we could take the nearby Durango-Silverton narrow gauge railroad trip the next day.

Historical hotels can be very iffy, but this one is a class act! When you first walk in you can see the history in the furnishings. The staff was top notch as well. The room I stayed in was decorated to period and they didn't miss a thing. Lovely. I was told each room is different in design and history. The breakfast was outstanding, with right out of the pan omelets, too. I'd stay here again and again.

Room Tip: Avoid facing main street, it stays loud until midnight.

First off-----We loved the Strater! Great vintage furniture & decor. Awesome bar (Diamond Belle) and restaurant (Mahogany) ---great food & ambiance. Staff is very helpful and extends themselves graciously.
Our room had a queen sized bed & a single----while the rooms were well appointed, the mattresses & linens could use an upgrade. We're a little spoiled with the "Heavenly Beds" offered by our favorite chain, I admit----but these could be dramatically improved with a mattress topper & higher thread count sheets. I'm also under the impression that he Strater has no king-sized beds. (maybe because the beautiful, ornate antique headboards are part of the original furniture from the period when it was established------but two twins can be positioned together to frame up a king mattress)

More than a bit pricey (AARP "Discounted" to $190) on Sunday night, but..... Beautiful old hotel that is well cared for. Comfy bar scene, and pretty good buffet breakfast in morning. Nice mix of old and new furnishings and furniture. A bit noisy, as old hotels tend to be.

This hotel is very popular in high tourist summer season, being just a block from the Durango/Silverton steam train. And it is in heart of downtown shopping and restaurant district.

Free parking in the rear of the hotel with a few spaces, plus more in the lot across 7th St. If on motorcycle, there is good space at the hotel rear.

Room Tip: Corner Room 110 has a great antique double, plus a single bed. Lots of great antique furnishings...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Built in 1887, The historic Strater Hotel is a prominent downtown Durango, Colorado landmark located two blocks north of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Cleveland pharmacist, Henry Strater, believed Durango would thrive, and with its prosperity, it would need a grand hotel. The Strater Hotel opened after an expenditure of $70,000 and placement of 376,000 native red bricks and hand-carved sandstone cornices and sills. As the hotel evolved, it became a popular winter retreat for Durango town folk who would close their own homes during the cold months and move into the hotel. Currently, the Strater Hotel houses the world’s largest collection of American Victorian Antiques, many of which decorate its 93 guestrooms including its Louis L’Amour Room—designated Literary Landmark. The Strater Hotel is home to the Durango Melodrama & Vaudeville, Henry Strater Theatre, Diamond Belle Saloon, Mahogany Grille, Strater Catering and Events, and The Office Spiritorium. ... more   less
