“Always a Great Time at the Strater”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2013

We have stayed at the Strater about 6 times over the course of 20 years and have always enjoyed being there. I booked over the internet from the hotel's website. Look for the Everyone's a Local special deal. I asked for a quiet room with a view. Our room was way down the hall and we could look out to the Mountains and watch the steam engine train come through town. We have stayed in rooms overlooking Main Street and have enjoyed that view as well. We ate in the dining room and had an early bird diner. Very reasonable for a full course meal - I had the trout with apple/fennel stuffing, brussels sprout, salad and apple pie for desert. My amigo chose the steak, potatoes and veggies. Both were excellent meals. The atmosphere is relaxed yet elegant, quiet and private. The service is friendly and professional. Also, they buy from local farmers, which is always a plus in our book. Your room price includes breakfast. Many choices from homemade granola and sweets, posole, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, coffees, teas, juices. The free parking is a plus and you can walk around downtown Durango.

I took my boyfriend here for his 60th birthday, and the hotel was good in reserving the right room I requested. I was a little surprised that they didn't do anything for his special event. I asked and they said they charged for chocolates or anything else. I thought just a nice note in the room would have been thoughtful. We liked our room, and the service was okay. The hotel itself is like a living museum, and my boyfriend who loves history and the old west, thoroughly enjoyed it. The more formal bar not the gimmicky western bar, was very relaxing and beautiful. We had appetizers in there and they were quite good. Also, the main dining room was quite beautiful, though we never ate there only for our breakfast which was included in the room price. We would definitely go back, and only stay at the Strater Hotel, it just gives you that feel of another time. I guess over the summer they repainted and recarpted but keeping it all within the same décor and time. Also, it is the perfect location in exploring downtown historic Durango.

You won't regret staying here. Dripping with history and charm, the Strater Hotel is a fantastic choice. The hotel's central location on Main Avenue lends itself to keeping your car in their parking lot while you walk to restaurants, coffee/tea shops and shops to your heart's content. In the evening you can enjoy live music in two different venues in the hotel. And, in the morning, wake up to a delicious breakfast. We will definitely be back and head straight to Strater Hotel next time we're in Durango.

This Hotel and it's staff were absolutely Wonderfull ! Bumming around Durango for a three day weekend in Nov. was great, a little quiet being inbetween seasons but very relaxing and plenty of restaurants, Pubs, Brewerys, shops to explore, and a wonderful river walk just behind the hotel.
I think I will make this an annual trip . The hotel is very historic (old) but the rooms are great, Warm, Quiet, Comfortable, Clean, and the entire hotel has been restored just like new.
Well worth the price.
Enjoy

Room Tip: I would recommend a little away from the Saloon. They have a band every night.

Take sometime., and enjoy this classic Western hotel., the rooms are done with period pieces., and the author Louis D'Amore., wrote western novels from one of the rooms facing the street., it is a beautiful historical landmark., that is wonderful. Spacious dining room., and if you are looking for great Colorado western fun., you have to stop by the Saloon, downstairs, it is a kick., to say the least., good food., prices are right., the gals in western outfits., and music., by locals., it in itself., is enough to make you want to come back., The streets are lined with wonderful stores., with unique gifts to take home., We had made a special trip.,for a Black Bear., for the back of our couch., and found it there, love it. Bye, for now

My husband & I stayed here for a few days on our way to Telluride. It was a good decision. Lovely old hotel. Not fancy ( they do have some fancy rooms) lovely furniture reproductions with original antiques out in the hallway. Wonderful desk clerks! Great saloon grill with live music all the time.
Main Street was a lot of fun. Great restaurants but not cheap. Love to go back.

Room Tip: Corner rooms may have more windows, we only had one. Shower only in our queen bed room.

Stayed here with my fiance and cannot rave enough about it. We felt like we'd entered another time in the Old West, on our way back to Denver from Monument Valley. Live music in the evenings and incredible cocktails - try the Cosmos - and potstickers (!) in the lounge in the evening. Highly recommended>

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Built in 1887, The historic Strater Hotel is a prominent downtown Durango, Colorado landmark located two blocks north of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Cleveland pharmacist, Henry Strater, believed Durango would thrive, and with its prosperity, it would need a grand hotel. The Strater Hotel opened after an expenditure of $70,000 and placement of 376,000 native red bricks and hand-carved sandstone cornices and sills. As the hotel evolved, it became a popular winter retreat for Durango town folk who would close their own homes during the cold months and move into the hotel. Currently, the Strater Hotel houses the world’s largest collection of American Victorian Antiques, many of which decorate its 93 guestrooms including its Louis L’Amour Room—designated Literary Landmark. The Strater Hotel is home to the Durango Melodrama & Vaudeville, Henry Strater Theatre, Diamond Belle Saloon, Mahogany Grille, Strater Catering and Events, and The Office Spiritorium. ... more   less
