“Great Location downtown Durango”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2013

First, it has the best location for hanging in historic Durango. The staff is awesome and really makes the stay special. Especially loved the breakfast....better than most breakfast included places....hot and cold items included...especially loved the "Posole", and Chef David even gave me the recipe. The rooms are fairly small but nicely furnished with antique items and the modern conveniences as well. One item that might bother some....the heat is centrally controlled so you better be happy with the staff controlled setting. It was a little cool for my Florida beach baby, so they brought us a space heater. Highly recommended !!

The Strater is pretty cool! It's totally packed with the oddest assortment of Old West historical item, and dripping with every sort of architectural embellishment. There's a "gunfight" in the Saloon every night at 7, & the staff all dress in period costume.
The standard room wasn't spacious, but it was very clean, and interestingly decorated and furnished. Each room features hand painted walls and various antique pieces.
The staff was quite helpful, & very pleasant.

We spent a wonderful 3 nights in the Strater Hotel, Durango. From the room, which was decorated authentically, to the saloon bars, to the entertainment - everything was great. We went to a Bluegrass Concert in the theatre in the hotel and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The local people were dressed in costumes of the era when the hotel was in its hay day and the guests even dressed up for breakfast. All in all a great break.

Room Tip: Some rooms are on the small side. You should ask for a larger room when you are booking.

Must say I was disappointed when we first went to our room. It contained antiques as promised but was not particularly large and was not from any particular period. The bathroom looked like a 50s or 60s remodel with no attempt to make it blend in. There was a an evening during our 3 day stay that the elevator did not work and we were on the third floor. Parking is not convenient with a few spaces adjacent, quite a few more across the street and many more about a block away across the railroad tracks. Why the very good rating? After I got around its shortcomings the place was really quite enjoyable. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean and of course the hotel is very centrally located, 2 blocks from the train station and near the center of the action in Durango. There were various dining and drinking options at the hotel itself and a nearly limitless supply nearby. We particularly enjoyed the hotel's Diamond Belle Saloon with decent food, good drinks, and an amazing piano player from New York. The provided breakfast was very good. You don't expect outstanding views from an old hotel in the middle of town but at least we could see the trains leave and and return to the station and we we could see some of the surrounding hills in the distance. We enjoyed our stay and would stay there again.

Room Tip: Be sure to check what view your room choice is likely to have.

This is an historic hotel which captures the essence of the 19th century without sacrificing the conveniences of the 20th century. Beautiful lobby, beautiful restaurants and most importantly beautiful rooms. My only small compliant would be with the mattress. Staff were extremely pleasant. A fun place to spend a day and a night.

Our bedroom was furnished with antiques, beautiful period wallpaper, and had a “room diary” where previous occupants had made comments, which was a nice touch. The bathroom was adequate but didn’t have any character, and felt like it belonged in a different hotel.
The hotel is conveniently situated right in the heart of Durango, close to the narrow gauge railway terminal, but as the train service is limited to give time in Silverton this wasn’t a problem. There is free parking allocated to the hotel, but you don’t realise that until you’ve checked in at reception and had it pointed out on a map.

spent a couple of days in Durango and this Victorian hotel is right out of the old west. Arrived late and was just able to order food in the adjacent bar. It was excellent, and the atmosphere a lot of fun even for a Monday night. Beautiful antiques throughout. Fun to hear the train whistle each morning and evening as it comes through town. Worth a stay and no more expensive than the Residence Inn.
